I'm no expert but what I wrote below sounds sensible enough...

Running is a combination of aerobic and anaerobic exercise, depending on how you run of course.  I don't remember my high-school biology enough to explain the difference except that anaerobic conditions exist with a lack of oxygen.  This is when your muscles use more oxygen than your blood stream can provide.  This can be a good thing.  If you don't push your limits you're not going to reap the benefits.

Your heart is muscle and needs to be exercised just like anything else.  The way you exercise it is to increase your heartrate through exercise.  As you exercise, your muscles require more oxygen.  Oxygen is transported in the blood stream so when you're muscles ask for more oxygen, the heart pumps harder and faster in order to supply it.  Your body also has a lot of very, very tiny blood vessels.  The word corpsicle comes to mind but I don't remember if that's the right word or if my spelling is correct.  Anyway, a hard-working heart will help expand these tiny blood vessels and even help create new pathways.  I think I read this in Science or Scientific American years ago.

Similiarly, lungs are filled with a boat-load of air sacs.  I think these air sacs can close up or fill with fluid or something.  Heavy breathing and repeated exercise helps re-open these sacs and flush out the goo.

Running helps your heart because it prevents you from getting a disease called Congestive Heart Failure (CHF) and a heart attack.  It helps because the more you run the more blood you pump.

Mm'kay. Running helps build leg muscle and keeps your heart and lungs healthy. If you don't do any cardiovascular activity, then simply walking a moderate distance may cause you to feel short of breath, and that's no good. Also, by doing such exercises, you're less at risk of heart disease.

Running uses all the muscles of your body. It helps to raise your matablalism, which means it reduces body fat. But, in order to have good results, you must remember to try and burn as many calories as you consume. It is important to excercise every day for at least 45 minutes. You do not need to do difficult or fast excercising, because that means more breaks and less calorie burning. You should exercise slowly and correctly.
