I WOULD SAY FUEL PUMP TAKE A BIG RUBBER HAMMER AND BEAT ON THE GAS TANK IF WHILE HAVING SOMEONE TURN THE ENGINE OVER IF IT TRIES TO RUN IT THE FUEL PUMP. ALSO LOOK AND SEE THAT THE IN TANK FUEL PUMP IS CONNECTED AND YOU SHOULD HEAR IT RUN WHEN YOU TURN THE KEY ON . I WORK ON DODGE VANS TRUCKS AND CARS THEY ARE ONLY FEW OF VECHILES A WORK ON I'AMA JOURNEYMAN MECHANIC FOR A LOCAL POWER COMPANY

Car has no carb..it's a Thottle Body and should not be adjusted or needing any adjustments. I would look for a schrader valve that is on the fuel rail under the hood and with the motor cold and no battery connected or cigarette in your mouth ...or anyones mouth for that matter depress the schrader valve. Gas should spurt out ..if not fuel pump is not pressurizing the system. My guess is check the fuel pump..it should make a hum noise when u 1st turn the key all the way on.

Seth, I had the same problem with my 96.  I ended up having to adjust the throttle stop screw.  Access is limited by a recessed cap that you have to punch out with a screwdriver and use a T-25 bit to adjust the screw.

I own 96 intrepid. Replaced fuel pump. Hooked up voltmeter to fuel pump electrical lines and found voltage. No fuel pressure at rail, so I knew it was fuel pump($273.00). Also, does anyone have problems with oil getting on spark plugs? Replaced o-rings in spark plug tubes and this solved it! Question: does anyone have problem with clunking in suspension? Ant photos or pics would be helpful. Besides replacing each component individually, what could I do to find out where clunking is coming from?

I've had to replace front sway bar bushings, lower control arm bushings and k-frame mounts in my 96 over the last 2 years for clunking noises. The lower control arm bushings make a clunk when taking off and also when stopping. The other noises are up/down movement in wheels and/or bumps in the road

If your car starts hard or not at all buy a block heater(installs in a freeze plug in the back of the motor) or a magnetic oil pan heater and plug it in or put the car in a garage.  Those would help even though my 96 doesn't have any problems.
OHHHH Does anyone know how to change front reading/courtesy lights email me ddmatteson@yahoo.com

I HAVE A 1996 INTREPID THAT STARTS-BUT THEN STALLS WHILE DRIVING IT-WASTE OF TIME TO TAKE IT TO MECHANICS-CHANGED PLUGS&WIRES-THAT HELPED-BUT THE BIGGEST HELP WAS SPRAYING THROTLE BODY CLEANER INTO THE THROTTLE BODY&reving the engine by hand-THIS KEEPS IT STARTING VERY WELL&RUNNING FOR A FEW DAYS WITHOUT STALLING-THEN IT NEEDS ANOTHER THROTTLE BODY SPRAY JOB FIX -these dodge intrepids are like diabetics-so you need the same cheap band aid solution--throttle body cleaner WORKS LIKE insulin to A DiABETIC-THE STALLING PROBLEM IS NOT FIXABLE-BUT YOU CAN MANAGE THE SYMPTOMS VERY WELL WITH A $2 CAN OF THROTTLE BODY SPRAY

I have a 1996 Dodge intrepid and my car used to do the same exact thing. but i didn't want to deal with it so I sent it to a body shop so that they could find out what was wrong with my car, they never told me what was wrong with it but they fixed it for me so I would suggest that you take your car to the body shop right away or call for them to come and pick it up for you.

It's my understanding that Dodge had recall for defective fuel injection fuel rails that involved cold starting issues.  I'd check at a Dodge dealership to see if your vehicle was subject to the recall.  If it was replacement of the fuel rails could resolve the cold start issue.

Has anyone tried fuel line antifreeze and or injector cleaner sometimes moisture gets in the fuel system and can cause some trouble with starting. I've had this problem and almost any other one with my 95. It has never refused to start for me but has had cold start problems from the day I bought it in 97. Most times I can put the pedal to the floor and crank it until it starts. I believe this is actually a fuel cutoff in this vehicle or so I was told by a mechanic. Also check the IAC (don't ask me what it stands for) but it is what regulates the air fuel mixture when cold starting and also when the A/C is running.

I also own a 95 Dodge Intrepid and I am having a problem starting it.  It has fired in the pass week.  It is getting no spark or fuel.  Already changed the fuel pump, cam postion sensor, crank postion sensor, had the PCM checked, checked all relays, all fuses, jump connection at fuel relay and fuel pump works, but once i turn the key fule pump is not kicking in and its getting no spark.  I think it could be the ingition switch.  Not sure it is the only thing i haven't chaged yet.  Any ideas? E-mail me at rammindurango@aol.com.  Title e-mail Intrepid.

The thump is most likely the sway bars. It usually occurs on city/country roads. You'll very seldom notice it on the interstate.
Cost: approx. $150 installed.

I agree with Zing's assessment regarding the noise. I have 95 Concord that makes bad clunking noise and shakes the car when hitting the driveway.  I checked and the bushings on the left and right Lower Control Arm are shot to you know what.  They told me last year that I would have to replace the entire Lower Control Arm because they do not make the bushing, but I bought a set yesterday for $6.

I have a 1996 intrepid also.  I've had so many problems its a crying shame.  Lower control arms and bushings replaced twice, a $1000.00 for new catalytic converters, the door seals are coming loose, the window and door lock switches are malfunctioning.  I also have a short in the ignition column when I start it on hot days that prevents the windows and air conditioning from coming on.  Midas replaced my front brakes and rotors a year ago but the disc brakes melted.  I'm going to trade it in on a Honda!

All those engineers that engineered that stupid so called "Dodge Intrepids" are real smart on making people go crazy and confused, and waste their money so easy on replacing a lot of parts that are not even the problem. I also notice that they have three computers that are desinged to make you struggle with the car. SO get rid of any dodge in your house. I know this because i am a mechanic here in Albuquerque. Had the same problem with my 95 Trep.  95s & 96s have a super sensitive fuel injection system that is subject to "NOT STARTING" in super cold weather.  If your Trep sits for a day or two in cold weather, the fuel injection will not work properly, unless it is finely tuned.  If it is tuned properly, it will start every time.  Let's face it.  You probably haven't had a fuel injection tune-up, since you've owned the car.  Do it and your problem will be solved.

I also have a 96 intrepid that had front end clicking.  My tie rod ends both went bad only months after i replaced them.  That may account for any clicking or grinding noise you hear.  I also had to replace my strut mounts.  With bad mounts i could hear a thud anytime i hit the smallest of bumps.

Having the same problem with my 95 intrepid 3.3L. Sometimes it runs for 80 miles no problem, other times i can't get it to run for 2 miles without it stalling a dozen times.I've chanced coil packs, fuel filter, mass airflow sensor, PVC valve, TPS, and looked around for any bad vacuum lines. When i have the problem while driving my RPMS will shoot to 4K while my speedometer suddenly drops to 0. Sometimes it stalls when shifting from reverse to drive, sometimes stalls while driving, sometimes it just stalls as soon as i turn the key. I am getting no error codes from my computer ( by turning the key from off to on 3 times, and counting the times the check engine light flashes, and looking up the codes on alldata.com) This is starting to get me very frustrated and i'mworried about it stalling while crossing traffic, my email is xey420@yahoo.com some help would be greatly appreciated thank you.

no one has specified whether they have the 3.3L ohv motor or the 3.5L dohc motor. my '96 has the 3.5 dohc. ohv means that the 3.3 is completely different and doesn't share any components with the 3.5. it's funny that two people mentioned carburetors. no '93-'98 intrepid has a carb. anyway, the only problems with my car are that the driver side doors are completely smashed in, and some of the power window buttons are messed up, but nothing on the car is really worth spending money on.

as far as the clunking, check inner tie rod bushings which can be bought after market now or the cradle to body bushings also called isolators.Isolators are available from dealers only unless you can find used ones these cost about 45 a piece new 4 at bottom and 4 at top but may only need to replace bottom thats all I did.

Sharkey, the clunking on your car would probably be the same as what mine was on my 96. I found out that it was the tie rod ends. The first time was the driver side and now the passenger. Good Luck!

Seth: i as well made the mistake of getting a 96. mine does the same thing, if i let it drop below 5-10mph then it feels like it will die. I replaced the fuel filter, all the speed sensors and still nothing.
TMB: i also live in CO where we have got at total of 4-6 feet of snow in the last 2 weeks and it would not start last night, i jumped it and it was fine, started around 12 noon today by its self but around 5pm i had to jump it again. I took it down to auto zone (where i got the battery) and they said that i have a croded/rusted + batter line, that i need to replace. they would wiggle the cord and the car would start but if they put it back where it was i would have no power, not even lights.

Now one of my other problems is the speedometer (SP) seed needle in the dash.. anyways it has a mind of its one. one day it will work fine then the other day it will spend alway around to under the peg at the 0mph mark. it will set there for 2 days (even while driving) and then it will fix its self but spinning left and go to the speed that i'mdoing. well when it fixes its self it feels like the car dies, then gets fuel and trys to go then dies and then it will run fine. Any ideas on any of this.

Then I go to drive off get 300ft. and it tries stalling until the temp gets up to normal but its a pain to keep it running and you cant just let in run in the driveway either itll stall. I put a new fuel filter throttle control sensor. Fuel pump is working good too anyone have a clue what to do?

Try replaceing the inline fuel filter its only like 12 bucks so try that. its easy to do and is located under the car right near the gas tank follow the fuel lines from the tank and you will find it shoul be a quick connect. good luck! Ps. you might wanna buy a new car though bc the intrepid is known for having problems.

I own a 1996 intrepid, the clunking is your exsaust, it pings when its really hot, its a sign saying you can still drive, but hurry and fix the problem before it gets worse.
I am in this situation as we speak, I will press the gas and go (like at a stop light)
and the acceleration is poor, it has loss of power, it clicks under my hood and it clicks faster, the faster I go, I replaced my sparkplugs, sp wires, filled it up w/ superunleaded gas, put fuel injector cleaner in it, but still same problem, when I had autozone check it out, by check engine tester, it showed up as cylinder misfire.
I talked to a machanic he thinks its the fuel injector its self. please give me your opinion. on what it might be.

I have a dodge intrepid 1996, and i am having problems, when i turn it off and later that day i try to turn it on i'mreally having trouble and when it turns on, it smells to gasoline, they checked the car with a scanner and they told me it was the oxygen sensor that wasn't making the right mix between air and fuel, but I'm not quite, sure, has anyone had this problem? any answer will be of help.
