I have a Chrysler LHS 1994.  The thermostat gauge has recently been going to H at random times.  I changed the thermostat a month ago and it seemed to have fixed the problem until recently.  What are some possible causes for the car to be acting like this?

My 94 LHS pulled the same stunt. I replaced the thermostat and that cured the problem. It had a little build up on the edge of the thermostats valve which would not let it open. This may sound stupid but did you put the thermostat upside down? One way to rule out the thermostat. Remove it completely and run the car without it. Make sure you fill the tank with coolant. Also, you might want to pour some coolant in the hole where the thermostat goes and fill the hose. If you get a air bubble in the system, it will run hot and get hot fast.

well all of you are doing something i see all my customers do. that is try and fix a problem starting with the cheapest part. and you all still think it lies there.  for one i am a 17 year mechanic and two i own a LHS. first place to diagnose a cooling problem is to ensure radiator has sufficient flow and isnt plugged in some areas.  then go to other cooling components from there

The shade tree mechanic will start with the cheaper part, and find a lot of times that is the cure for the problem....on the other hand, some auto repair shops start with the most expensive part and work their way down.  One of many experiences I've had with this was when I paid $400 for a repair shop to put on a new fuel pump on my 1988 Oldsmobile (based on their evaluation of the problem) - the problem still existed, so I put on new spark plug wires.....my $25.00 wires fixed the problem.  Another time was when I ended up spending $1200 for I don't know how many computer chips, etc, when the garage finally realized it was my timing chain.

Those of us posting on this site are most likely looking for ideas for troubleshooting our cars, AND, looking for the least expensive way to do it!

Bottom line.....sometimes the cheap fix fixes it, sometimes it doesn't.  Certainly makes more sense to me to start with the cheaper, less expensive route.

Good luck with the problem....I would just suggest the possibility of the thermostat being in upside down....but, that has already been mentioned and checked.

first thing diagnostic is to  determine if the area of problem is not centralized. cooling problems need flow of coolant if it wont flow check components, process of elimination i dont change anything with out first being sure its the cause. remove thermosatat and see if problem changesleave cap off etc.\

Recently I brought a LHS '97 and it goes hot suddenly. LHS doesn't have thermostat. Once I had same problem with grand am '96 and I solved just changing radiator cap but that don't fix the LHS problem. I guess the problem it's growing up 'cause there are water in the muffler. Some of you had some clue can help me to fix my car?

Power windows and panel lights involved? Though I'm not an automotive technician I would start checking electrical control modules. No experience with model in question, but a wiring diagram will be a great investment in my opinion. Once there I would take a look to all malfunctioning functions involved and what they have in common.

I have a 93 and it has been running hot and up and down. I live in Phoenix area and the car came from flagstaff up in the mountains so could the thermostat be set too high for how hot it is in phoenix? If I punch through the thermostat is that a possible solution?

I just laid my 94 LHS to rest.  I loved that car.  I work at a Chrysler dealership and have access to Chrysler Master technicians and EVEN THEY were perplexed by what seemed to be a cascade of cause and effect that seems related to two early recalls, one for electrical shorts under the hood (and resulting intermittent failure of the thermostat) and the other for fuel injector leaks that coupled with item one, present a fire hazard that further damages wiring.  We had been chasing the problem for 6 months when eventually so much damage had been done that it appeared nonsensical to continue.  With 130K miles and 13 good years behind her, I am sending her off to the bone yard.  My experience indicates that this thermostat thing is one symptom in a complex set of failures that go back to design error.  All in all, the 94 LHS was a great car.  If I knew then what I know now, I would have started with the electrical problem first, redone those early recalls and maybe saved myself some money, but ah well...<sigh>
