How to store variable length bit arrays into a file using C ?

You will have to gather the bits into bytes, as follows: starting with a zero byte, multiply by two, add the first bit, multiply by two, add the second bit, etc. until you have added the eighth bit; then output that byte, and start again with a fresh zero byte. You will also need to choose a file format that specifies how many bits are in the file's last byte (1-8); you could put this information in the file's first byte, but in any case you need to make sure that everyone who may have to read this file knows exactly what you're doing.
