My check engine light comes on periodically in my 2001 chrysler 300m. I have been advised by a chrysler dealer to check the gas cap to make sure it is closed properly, which I did and it has been loose each time I have checked. I have had the hood checked and there is no problem, what could possibly be the cause?

Well if the check engine light came on they have a computer they can hook up to the fuse panel that will tell you why it came on  it costs about$30 dollars, but it is better than buying a new motor.Check  motor oil, water (while it is cool)could be air filter or mass air flow sensor if you can after driving about 25 miles check transmission fluid.

The obd11 connector is directly under the steering wheel. And your chrysler dealer is probably right based on mileage and time factors and loose cap. This here is an EVAP
issue.

THE EVAP CODE THAT YOUR DEALER IS TALKING ABOUT RELATED TO A LOOSE GAS CAP IS A COMMON PROBLEM. WHEN YOU FUEL YOUR VEHICLE, MAKE SURE YOU HEAR THE GAS CAP CLICK A COUPLE OF TIMES AND THE PROBLEM SHOULD CLEAR UP. THERE IS A POSSIBILITY OF A LEAK IN YOUR EVAP SYSTEM, AND KEEPING THE CAP TIGHT WILL ELIMINATE THE CAP AND THE DEALER WILL NEED TO LOOK FOR YOUR LEAK. A .010 OF AN INCH LEAK IN A RUBBER HOSE CAN CAUSE THIS.

The infamous "loose gas cap" claim is the dealers favorite weapon against the consumer. There are literally hundreds of codes that will turn on the MIL (Multifunction Indicator Lamp) AKA "check engine light". The code that it stores should dictate how and what is diagnosed. A loose gas cap can indeed set a P0442, P0455, P0456, et al codes, but even IF you have one of these codes it doesn't always mean that you left the gas cap loose. There is probably 20 feet of lines and hoses, along with the gas tank and filler neck where a leak can occur and result in a DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code) with MIL.

Hope this helps.

P.S. For the person that had the 'flashing' MIL; a flashing MIL is very serious and the flashing is a warning that your Catalytic Converter (read $$) may be damaged.

I have 1998 Nissan Altima with 68,000 miles on it and my check engine light came on.  I replaced the air filter took it on a good road trip (80 miles), when I turned it off and waited a few minutes, turned it back on, the light went off and has stayed off.

OK, So I have a 2001 300M. The other day, the check engine light came on for the very first time, about 2 minutes after startup in the morning. So I open up the manual, and it says, "check the gas cap, doofus!" so I do, and whaddaya know? It's loose. So I tighten it until it clicks, and go on my way. But, the damn light has been staying on for a week now. What the heck do I have to do to get the light to go away? I KNOW there isn't a damn thing wrong with the car!

I have a 1996 Ford Explorer XLT and my check engine light came on the second month after i baught it 2 and a half years ago and it been on till this day.  Warning please be carfull about the dealers you go to and them telling you a lie about the gas cap.  Sometimes that's a damn lie.  I bought it to auto zone and they game me three names that's wrong with it Camshaft Sensor, EGR Insufficient, and a Catylist effecient bank 1 what ever tha hell that mean.  Good looking car no scratches no dents paint great but watch out to everyone about the CHECK ENGINE light holla

I own a 2002 New Beetle Turbo-S... my Question is my MIL is on again & off again ... Auto Zone scanned my computer & the codes are 0071, 0072, 0068 :someone told me the 1st 2 codes mean "ambient air temperature sensor" but don't know what the other is ... my car also sometimes will not crank right up (3 times in 4 months) but it does feel like it wants to , so i hit the gas pedal a bit & it cranks ... do you know what the problem could be ?

To Round4AReason,  I had that with my Beetle.  It was an intermittently failing Engine Speed Sensor.  It took my getting stranded in a sleet storm for the dealer to finally find the problem (after having it in 5 times previously).

My check engine light came on when I got gas from an off the wall gas station.  It has been on ever since (I have a 01 300m also).  I read somewhere that the quality of gas could cause problems in the engine, but I don't know what kind.  Does anyone have any ideas about my situation?  TIA.

YOU PAY 30 K FOR A CAR AND THEN LET A 7.00 PER HR GUY CHECK YOUR CAR--YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR. ENGINE DIAGNOSTICS ARE NOT FOOL PROOF-EXPERIENCE IS STILL THE BEST. TAKE IT TO A PERSON QUALIFIED TO TELL YOU THE ANSWER
