Hi Robert - my collie started doing the same thing... does it have very dry skin or are you grooming the hair too short? If you peel back his hair and find little white flakes, they lick because their skin is itchy. Try to add a few drops of vegetable oil in their food at night and make sure not to cut the hair too close. This has taken care of my collie's chewing problem.

Hi Robert.. I have a nine year old sable rough neutered male.. he sometimes gets very dry itchy skin too.. and it has been aggravated year by year.. maybe you are right it could be an age related thing.  What I found helped immensely was using a high quality lamb and rice food, and I supplement with Trann, a Norwegian cod fish oil.. this has helped his itching and biting at his skin.  I had a scraping done to make sure it wasn't dem mange or something horrible.  No, just allergies vet said, and gave me a medicated shampoo.. with those things combined, his scratching is all but disappeared.  Also, make sure when you groom him, that you dry high power low heat and get him totally dry, or you can create these awful patches of a sort of itchy spot that smells.  I have seen this in rescue collies that are left to air dry!  A simple thing and it causes so much trauma afterwards.  The third day after the shampoo, put the advantage frontline on back of neck.. and allow to dry.  You should have no problems if you do all these things.. also, if you want to, you can give him vitamin E, two tablets a day over his food.. pierce it and squeeze it over the food.. or, just pill him .. Magic takes his vitamins wrapped in cheese.. lucky dog!   Good luck and Collie hugs, Jill
