To ensure that transition between phases of SDLC is not missing out on what has been captured in the previous phases

verification is very important in s/w testing.Verification measure your quality of the processes.In case of verification u verify each and step from initial of project to end of project.

verification involves checking the application in terms of papers, means reviewing the requirements, test cases reports so that it works as per the specifications.
(experience people might found odd in this solution)
whereas in validation real time testing is done on the application

In any product development or testing it undergoes many changes(say from version to version or build to build or one phase of SD LC to other phase).so to keep track of those changes and transitions verification is performed.
  Its does not mean that it  particularly meant for software quality.If we maintain such activities it will ease our next activities and obviously leads to qualitative software.

verification means we should verify the requirement ,design coding accoding to customer requirements.
