How big of a truck does someone use to tow an Ericson 27'.  My husband and I have been looking for an Ericson 25', 25+' or 26 (on a trailer). However, I'm seeing 27's with trailers and wondering if a Toyota Tundra has enough capacity to tow it.  Thanks for any experience that can be shared (and also leads on good boats for sale!)

I looked at towing capacity on a regular toyota tundra, they are rated at 5230 lbs.  An Ericson 27 displaces 7000 lbs.  Add 1000 lbs for the trailer and provisions, and you are well over the Tundra limit.
Towing a sailboat is a pretty big deal, especially with a fixed keel.  That's a big, heavy boat.

We just bought a 2003 24ft Springdale Travel Trailer.  The dry vehicle weight is 4000.  We have a 1999 Chev S10 Ext Cab 4x4 with a 4.3 V6.  The people at the camper dealership said it would pull it with no problem, but we're afraid it will tear something up.  What's your opinion?

I just purchased a 1975 Ericson 27 in the Los Angeles area.  I drove down and pulled it back to Utah. (14 hours and lots of big hills) My tow vehicle is a 2002 Ford F150 with a 5.4 litre V-8.  The manual says that the max tow rating is 7100 lbs. I had the dealer install a heavy duty cooler for the transmission and it performed very impressively and the temps remained normal.
The only problem was that with a 1/2 ton truck, the tongue weight is so heavy that it pulls the back of the truck down to within 6 or 8 inches of the road. This in turn places most of the weight on the forward axle of the trailer.  A 3/4 ton truck would be a  better tow vehicle for that reason.

Hi  -  While motorcycle racing, I towed a 6x12 box trailer all over east of the Mississippi with no trouble using my 4.3 Astro van. 10years (different vans) Trailer empty was 1500 and full estimated 3000.  Have a good, oversize, additional oil cooler for the transmission !  Wouldn't even leave home without it.   If you are in the flat 4000 is probably ok.  If you have mountains - even long hills I would suggest a 5-liter + V8.  I switched up to a 350 Yukon and recently towed a 5000 lb boat.  Again, on the flat, no problem.  But up a hill, its definitely hard work, even for the 350.  PS Have good trailer brakes, electric or surge.

I have towed a Balboa 27 approx 6000lbs. for years and thousands of miles from Wa. state to Baha and points between with a 69 GMC two wheel drive w/ a 350 eng and auto. trans. It did the the job okay but complained over some summits.I've recently bought a low milage 93 Dodge diesel 4x4 and would suggest nothing less. Fuel milage is much better too.

I may have a pristine Ericson 26 (1985) available for sale by 7/1/2007, as I'm considering purchasing it but may not find reasonable shipping cost from Madison WI to Seattle.  Today is 6/26/07.  This boat is literally like new inside and out.  It's displacement is 5250 lbs FYI, so with a trailer your Tundra might just handle it!!

My cell is 425-208-9798 for more info.
