There are two types of JRT's  One is usually referred to as the Parson Jack Russell and is now AKC recognized.  They have the longer legs. They generally have more white in their coat as specified in their breed type.  The other type is often referred to as "shorties' or "puddins".  The Parson Jack Russell people seem to look down on the shortie breed type.  I love them both!!

I have the shorter of the two types.  I didn't realize that she was much shorter until we came about another JRT.  She was much taller.  My JRT is doing great with my cats and with the new addition to the family (3 year old shepherd/lab mix).

They are very difficult to potty train though.

I learned that the Parson Russel Terrier was the shortie type, and The JRTs were the longer legged type. I have a shortie. he is 12" at the withers and weighs 13#s, he has the shorter legs. and yes they can be very difficult to potty train. Crate training them usually works pretty well. They go into the crate and only come out when they are going outside. They will learn eventually, but if you have a male they will have a tendency to mark the house. They will do this as an attempt to get back at you for leaving them home alone.

I had one of each of the Jack Russell Types. The smooth coat with the longer legs, and the broken coat with a little shorter legs. They are both great pets and the longer legged Jack was just as durable and compact as the stockier one. They really looked fabulous together on a long walk. The white was so sharp and clean in the individual patterns to their coats, that everyone loved them. lilly
