Is it normal for female goldens to calm down after a heat cycle?  My golden is 1 year old and used to be full of spunk, but since she passed her heat cycle she has been extremely lethargic.  Any advice?

Hi! Your dog could be having false pregnancy (which is when their body thinks they're pregnant after going into heat when they really are not) and they're behavior often changes during pregnancy. Also she could be maturing but I never thought a dog grew out of being playful!

All dogs are pregnant 58-66 days (9 weeks) from about the last mating. They will start showing signs about 5 weeks into pregnancy so don't start counting the days from the first signs. If you want to see how far along your dog is go to http://www.schaferhund.com/pregnancy.htm
Good luck!!

John,
A golden female goes through extensive physical changes with her first heat cycle. These changes are demanding upon your girl.

Your dog is also still very much a puppy, so there may be other physiological and emotional changes that are occuring as well. Keep in mind your puppy is growing up, and developing some maturity.

I have a 4 month old Golden Retriever.  He is unusually calm.  He likes short walks and having his belly rubbed, but does not have much energy for anything else.  My parents bought his brother who is VERY active and has lots of energy.  When they are together, my puppy plays hard but that is the only time I see him very active or excitable.  In one sense I feel lucky because he doesn't do ANYTHING wrong.  He has been housebroken from day 1, does not chew, and doesn't jump at guests.  When I have a guest over, he immediately rolls over on his back and waits for them to pet him.  On the other hand, I am concerned about his lack of energy.   Is this normal?

I too have a golden who has slowed down considerably since her last heat.  This was her second heat.  The first was at six months, second at 1 year.  Her eating has also changed.  Does the 1 year of age mark such a dramatic change in activity level, or is it the heat that changes them?

Hi,

Like the first answer she could be having a false pregnancy. Usually, as I have seen with my golden retriever that they are also maturing after heats...but my girl is still playful at the least...she has her times where she likes to be left alone. Hope it helped you, John.

I have 3 Golden a male and female who are 1yr also a female who is 4yrs my 1yr female came in to heat in 10 January my older female golden was not in heat, however my older golden who was not in heat let the male mount her. How can this happen and can she be pregnant. She showed no signs of being in heat. no blood before, after he mounted her she did bleed for a minute then nothing. I believe she bleed because she has never been mated before so she was still a virgin. Help I'm puzzle..
