if you mean the USA, they're 50, plus a "free associated state" (Puerto Rico) and several territories (actually overseas colonies). but why don't you just look in an encyclopedia?

That's a trick question -- at lest three "states" are technically "Commonwealths" (Virginia, Kentucky, and...errr.. Mass.?).

There are 50 states and 1 district (District of Columbia). These include Alaska, Hawaii, PA, Va and Kentucky.

Apparently 50 states, with 3 or 4 of them technically commonwealths, plus we have Puerto Rico situation and District of Columbia.

Technically there are only 45 states.  Because there are 4 commonweaths...Mass, Va, Pa, and Ky.  And one is a Providence.  RI.

There was a total of 18 states in the Union during the Civil War, and 13 states in the Confederacy.  Border states like Missouri and Kentucky were part of the Union but they often sided with the confederacy.

A state of the United States (a U.S. state) is any one of the fifty states (four of which officially favor the term commonwealth) which, along with the District of Columbia, form the United States of America. The separate state governments and the United States federal government share sovereignty, in that an "American" is a citizen both of the federal entity and of his or her state of residence. However, state citizenship is very flexible, and no government approval is required to move between states (with the exception of convicts on parole).
