i have had a tattoo for 6 months now and even though its fully healed, if i scratch it for any reason, the tattoo becomes swollen and i can feel the outline as if it is on top of my skin.....is this normal or is it some kind of allergy?, i really need to know, if it is normal how long should it be like this? always?

It sounds like dermal layer of your skin is has some scarring which is common in the case of tattoos.  My arm band does not itch, but whenever I shiver it becomes raised. I was told by my artist that this is due to scarring of the underlying tissue. It's probably nothing to be too worried about and should decrease with time, but it would be a good idea to give your artist a call or consult with a dermatologist just to rule out the possibility of an allergy.
