MSMGT.exe - a Spyware or MemoryMeter.....I really don`t know which it is. Nevertheless the software "Search&Destroy" removed it from my harddisc. You can download this software for free from: www.tomcoyote.org/spybot

MSMGT.EXE can be safely classified as new Total Velocity foistware.

It creates 'hidden' ftp connection on port 21 to:
66.159.219.200
DSL Extreme Network, aka; Total Velocity

There is an entry in Add/remove which does absolutely nothing
'MS T Media-Display'

If you haven't done so yet, kill the 'run'; entry with hijackthis, delete the file itself and to clean up you can load regedit
Start/run regedit
Expand:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\
And delete the 'MSMGT' sub -folder.

Run SpyBot again when done to clean the remains.
It does add these values as well:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\htmlfile\CLSID "Config"

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\htmlfile\CLSID "GUID"

Which SpyBot had trouble with probably because that file was in use and/or unidentified.

I sent that file to Symantec and got this response.

filename: D:\flood\MSMGT.exe
machine: PETER
result: This file is infected with Adware.MemoryMeter

Developer notes:
D:\flood\MSMGT.exe is non-repairable threat.  Please delete this file and replace it if neccessary.

I had that, too.

Often, I would get a Zone-Alarm notice that msmgt.exe wanted to access the internet.

I tried deleting the file (in /windows/msmgt.exe) and my computer said I couldn't because it was being used by Windows.

So, I right-clicked on the file and clicked "uninstall with Unistaller." I have McAffee's Uninstaller on my machine. I uninstalled all of their other products, but I like that one.

Anyway, it uninstalled MSMGT.EXE and rebooted my computer. Poof! MSMGT. EXE was gone! I then ran Norton System Doctor and it cleaned up a couple of things the Uninstaller left behind.

It seems that this has stopped another problem I was having. Often, when I pushed CTRL-ALT-DEL, I would see a program called lexplore (LEXPLORE, not IEXPLORE). Whenever it was running, my computer slowed down and I had to reboot a couple of times a day. Sometimes, I couldn't even reboot and had to turn my computer off. I no longer get "iexplore" since getting rid of MSMGT.EXE.

Were the 2 related???

I hope the people at Total Velocity have their Scrotums rot away and the balls get squished on the floor. I have wasted over 20 hours getting rid of this problems. This is the same kind of people that molest children.

I restarted in "safe mode" and was able to go into the windows folder and delete it.
I tried all the suggestions above first and nothing worked.
So far I have not noticed a problem in removing it this way.

I have followed the last persons advice I went into safe mode and deleted both. but ms t-media display still appears in my add/remove program in control panel.

my problem is that I am able to delete it from add/remove but the problem is that it keeps coming back every time I restart the computer. I need your help please.

also I have noticed that I get many pop up ads due to it. is this one of the side effects that people experience with it?

please any suggestions.

hitman,
Did you delete the "ms t-media" display from the add/remove program while still in safe mode? I deleted mine while in safe mode and it did not come back. Try it both ways to see if either one will work for you.
Good Luck.

Ok, another solution... This is quite simple but it works surprisingly well.  Find the file using the search function.  Change the name of the file, ie change msmgt.exe to msmgt.exr or something.  This will not disable it right away but may allow you to delete it.  If you can't delete it restart your computer, it will now be inactive and you should be able to delete it.  This has worked for me with other viruses so it's a good quick fix to try first.  Be sure to go to uninstall and remove all of it.  I also put it on my blocked list on Zone Alarm to prevent further intrusions.

When will we be free of these jerks?!?!

but I don't understand what this ms tmedia display did. did it pop up windows of ads or did it do something else. I am interested to know. any ideas?

You maybe no need to restart your computer in safe mode to fix this problem, you can open your task manager, (ALT+DEL+CTRL and select the task manager), into the process page and find the MSMGT.exe, terminate it, and now, search the MSMGT and delete the finded files, and then go to the add/remove program to unistall ms_tmedia, things done.

I also had Msmgt.exe....and found that I think I got rid of it using Norton Utilities...wipeinfo. At least it now allows me to use scandisk which it didn't before.

or restart the compuetr with a boot diskett
and go to DOS. Write into c:\windows
and just type
"del MSMGT.exe" and use Enter.

And after reboot
you can delete the "ms t-media" display from the add/remove program.

Also type "regedit" from Run
and seek for a string called MSMGT
When you find it, just delete the string.

This may work. For Win98 systems:

Click - Start, Run
Type "msconfig"
When the Systems Configuration Utility comes up, click the tab - Startup
Scroll down till you see the file MSMGT
Uncheck this then exit, reboot.
You can now delete the file.
Search for more similar filenames and delete them.
Use a utility tool to clean your disk of all remnants of this file.

Thanks RVFB; this worked for me and was so easy; it also enabled me to remove "cmesys.exe" and for the first time in yonks, I've been able to run scan disk and de-fragment the c drive without some unwanted intruder interfering.
Thanks again!

tgcsfo,  the fix you suggested worked great.  My wife's machine got infected but our firewall blocked the bug from getting out.  your suggestion to change the extension worked great and after rebooting we were able to remove the file and spybot got the rest!!

If you ever see a new item on your taskbar----download the free SPYBOT SEARCH AND DESTROY. It will tell you what problems are hosting onto your computer--virus, trojans, worms, hijackers, maliware, trackers...etc.

I have not been able to find anything on the net regarding
this problem. Each time I start my Pc, a message pops up
that says me or one of the programs I'm using wants to
connect to c.centralmedia.ws. This message can pop up
dozens of times while I am working. I don't want this
junk and haven't added any programs that use this. Don't
know where it came from. HELP!

I have downloaded all updates for Windows, updated Norton
virus checker and then ran a system scan, even downloaded
and ran Spybot Search & Destroy. The message still comes
up. Thanks for any help you can give.
