There are 3 types of actual midi bagpipes.  They are:  Version MIDI'sMIDI bagpipe which are by far the most advanced but most certainly a waste of money at $5000!  the Master Gaita ("gaita" being the spanish name for bagpipes as it resembles a goat) which seems to be a kind of Macintosh inspired design, or lastly the DegerPipe which I own.  The DegerPipe is by far the best choice due to its true to form design and highly versatile capabilities.  It has two outputs.  One is for MIDI control capabilities though limited to only the 9 or 11 note capabilities of the bagpipes, and the other is a synthesized bagpipe output which sounds EXACTLY like a real bagpipe.  You can choose between smallpipe, or Great Highland Bagpipe sounds and the pitch can be changed to every key, so it is good to play with other instruments or along with your favorite recordings of different styles of pipes!!!  It can be found for around $400 to $440 US if purchased at the right place.  Try Aberdeen Bagpipes that's where I got mine and I LOVE it.  They are online and have a special that includes a custom case, here's the link

This article, although the author is extremely misguided in the realm of bagpipe knowledge, gives short excerpts about all 3.

The comments at the bottom of the article bring up a couple of other "electronic Pipes" although they don't have MIDI capabilities.  I would recommend getting the DegerPipe since I have one and love it, and don't use the MIDI control part at all since the built in sound is so good, but the Master Gaita might be a better choice for strictly the MIDI capabilities!

Whew!!  That's about all there is to know!  If you are interested in Techno Bagpipe compositions I created a song a long time ago you can download at my site
http://slimlist.emporia.edu/~weatheri/bagpipes_n_techno

or the artist Mark Saul has an incredible album called "Mixolydian" named after the Mode that the bagpipe plays in.  It is really a must have for anyone interested in electronic music with bagpipes.  Enjoy!
