I have a 1989 dodge dynasty that keeps over heating the fan...

I have a 1989 dodge dynasty that keeps over heating the fan wasnt kicking on we changed the censor but it still runs hot although a couple of days after putting the censor in the fan is kicking on I have ordered a relay switch now I wonder if I need it is it normal for this year and make to run hot?
