well if you haven't notice ( bringing your dog to the vet cost a lot of money ) don't you want to know for sure before you spend 100+ on vets fee when you can go buy something better for your dog or yourself. I know bringing your dog in to the vet is the best way but not unless u know for sure so don't listen to her. you should browse the Internet there's a lot of good advice and some sites even tells you how you can feel on the stomach well hopes this helps.

I say if you need to know that your dog is going to have puppies for sure to go to a vet and have her checked. Or you could wait and see if she starts to looked bigger. Your dog will most likely get pregnant when she in heat. Make sure you do the right thing!

check if your dog wobbles when she walks.  another way to check is if your dog starts to want to stay or sleep in only certain areas.  the most obvious way is to check if your dog's stomach has enlarged.

I'll answer the basic questions here. When a dog goes into heat she will be in heat most likely for a few weeks. If she gets bred she is most likely pregnant. Pregnancy lasts from 58-66 days. The earliest you can tell is 3-4 weeks along when you can go to the vet and get a test called repro check(that costs $20-$30). Small breed dogs will start getting bigger around 5 weeks. With bigger breed dogs sometime they don't show much until the 6-7 week. Other signs are increased interest in food and water, tummy that is pushed against ribs, lying around more, and possible increase in urinating due to the enlarging uterus that is squishing the blatter. If your dog is pregnant give her exercise because less labor complications are seen in healthy dogs. Around 6 weeks increase her feeding 25% each week until she's eating at least twice as much. Around the last week give her as much food as she wants. This will give you a big clue as to when she is ready to whelp(have pups) because she will lose interest in even the most tempting foods. Other signs that the time is near are restlessness, and "nest making." Learn as much as you can about what to expect during pregnancy and labor so you can call your vet if something goes wrong. birth complications can result in death so a good preparation site is http://www.hilltopanimalhospital.com/reproduction.htm. Getting ready for puppies is also a good thing to do. You need to know when to wean them, what to feed them, when to when to vacc. them, how warm they should be, etc. Pregnant dogs and puppies are an extremely large responsibility so be as prepared as possible. Good luck to all!!! Tanisha

"Hi!"If you want to know how to tell your dog is pregnant, then here I will tell you.See if your dog's stomach is getting bigger. Then check if her boobs are getting bigger.Next, look if your dog likes to rest more. Also, observe if she likes to go in warm spots to lay down. And last,(what I think is last, but I know there's other ways)check if she's loosing her taste. That's how I was told, and some I knew.Have a nice/fantastic day!Bye!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If your dog's stomach is bigger,if she has been around male dogs, and if she tends to have more interst in food she may be pregnant. You can take her to a vet but that costs money. YUCK!

get your pets spayed or nuetered and you wouldn't have a problem.

and as for people complaining that taking their animals to the vet 'cost money'... if you don't want to invest your time/care/money into your pet, then do the pet a favor AND DONT GET ONE.

My dog is pregnant right now and I could tell by her titties sagging, which are leaking milk and she eats alot more than usual, and if you feel around her belly towards her back legs, you'll be able to feel the pups. Make sure she has lots of water, my dog seems to be thirsty all the time. She also lays in the same spot. I have a black lab, so it may be different with smaller dogs. And as for taking your dog to the vet just to see if shes pregnant I think is unnecesssary. I believe in taking your pet to the vet for shots and if they are sick or hurt, but you can tell on your own if your pet is pregnant. Also, alot of vets put info on the net to help you. I also have a cat that is pregnant. I got alot of helpful info about her on the net. Good Luck to all that have pups or kittens on the way....

You can tell your dog is pregnet is when your dog changes its attitude and it's stomch is getting bigger, my dog told me by  always licking her stomach and you can put your hand on it's stomch and you can feel the puppies inside and if you think your dog is pregnet then take some uran and take it to a vet or the vet will give the dog a ultra sound and he or she will tell you and you will get a picture and you will get to see them

hi all well first you will see that your female dogs stomach will grow another sign is check her nipples they will get larger and pinker a big sign is that she will be eating more so leave lots of water and food you should also take her tempeter at the begging it will be at 101 f- then 24 hours before having pups her tempeter will go to 98 maybe lower she also will lay at shady spots oh yeah one other important thing is you should buy a small plastic pool (6 $ at Walmart) fill it up with towels clothes you don't use remember to keep old clothes & towels because my mom gave mine away right before my dogs pregnancy before labor she will be VERY RESTLESS then start digging in the pool don't worry its normal well hope i gave you good advice  Paola

I have a female dog and got her together with a male. I did not think anything had happened It was twice that they were together. The first time we left them alone, and the second time we sat and watched how they interacted with each other. He was not receptive at all. Since he was growling and nipping at her I had assumed that nothing had happened. But now I have noticed that she is lactating, but their was hardly any weight gain. Does this sound like false labor?

You can easily tell if your babygirl is pregnant by following all the advice above. The reason you should take you baby to the vet is to find out how many pups she's carrying. If you know that then you'll know when she's done giving birth.

You people are idiots. Half of you can't spell and the other half seem like tightwads. I agree. If you think taking your dog to the vet to see if she is pregnant is unnecessary than you shouldn't have a dog. I doubt any of you are breeding for the benefit for the breed. Get your dogs spayed or neutered.

I have a female Pomeranian who came on heat about a month ago and was mated with my male Pomeranian. I have noticed her nipples have become alot larger but there is no weight gain around her belly. If she was pregnant shouldn't she have gotten bigger a while ago or do dogs usually become bigger on the last few weeks? She has also been really impatient, being a little attention seeker, eating more and sleeps alot. Please help me.
Thank you

Yes it is possible for a dog to become pregnant with both ages considered, though it may be healthier for the pups and mother, to mate at a more proper age such as 2-7. It is easier on the mother to do so.

I know I said earlier that spending money on your animals by way of going to the vet is YUCK! but it really is not.I was talking about when it wasn't necessary like a pregnancy test. You should spend money on your pets for shots, if they are hurt, or need help. You don't always need to take them because of every little thing, check it out yourself, or look on the Internet, or in animal care books. If your dog is pregnant you should take it to the vet to make sure things are OK, but not to see if they are pregnant. Ask around before taking her to the vet and spending $50 bucks for them to say no she isn't pregnant.

Sidney,
You have all the charm of a rabid skunk.  Perhaps the answers given here offend your intellect due to spelling and grammatical errors, however, they do seem to be heartfelt... unlike yours. Perhaps many of these respondents are bi-lingual, are you?  You are very judgemental.  Since when is it necessary to run a dog to the vet for pregnancy testing?  It seems like a nice option, but only an option.  And, for heaven's sake, not everyone has to breed dogs for the benefit of the dog's breed. The benefits to the humans who will love and care for their litters should be reason enough.  If a litter of lovable mutts makes someone happy, so be it.  I'm sure you are very PC and can't help but loathe everyone "beneath" you, but FYI: You attract more flys with honey than vinegar.  Lighten up, hon.  P.S. I didn't do spell check... forgive me.

Hi everyone! My little 2-yr-old Yorkie is about 5 weeks along and we are defiantly seeing signs of pregnancy. Here are some of the tings I have notices and things the breeder told us to look for:
1. Her little belly, near her hind legs, is very swollen. We notice it most when she stretches out on her back.
2. He nipples are a lot bigger and hard when you LIGHTLY squeeze them.
3. Her belly is also hard and we can feel little puppy heads (how fun! we think there are 2!)
4. She's eating a lot more, even stealing food from our 60-pound mutt (he's ten times her size!!).
5. She's always been a lazy bum, but she has started laying down in strange places where she has never spent any time before.
I noticed there wasn't a lot of information concerning small dogs, so here is what I've noticed. I'm no professional, but I do know that my little one is pregnant. With these small dogs, the weight loss will not be very noticeable, they'll just gradually start looking chunky. Then, almost out of nowhere, their little bellies will begin to bulge out. I hope this helps. Good luck and God bless to all you expectant puppy mothers! <><

I have a pekingese and I think she is pregnant. She is very special to me and I want to be there for here as much as I can. It's only been two weeks and I can't wait to take her to the vet, and see her babies. You should take your dog to the vet and make sure everything is o.k. If your daughter was pregnant you would take her wouldn't you? Well people are different,  but she is my baby and I'm going to make sure she gets all the help and support that she needs. Hope you will do the same for your new moms.

Here is how you can tell if your dog is pregnant, if you see her chest getting bigger that's sign number one. Then if her stomache area gets bigger than it normally is. Then if you start to see milk [from the nipples]. The last step is if you start to see her getting more lazy.

Man's Best Friends?
Once I had two psychic dogs -
Their doggie thoughts they'd beam to me
And I would write them up in blogs
To save them for posterity.
Though most of what they thought was not
The kind of stuff I want to know -
Like who win the seventh race?
Who will place and who will show?
They're really not much use to me -
Spending their time on politics
And channeling such boring stuff.
Why can't I teach these dogs new tricks?
"Bush by 15 - will be the score"
They told me telepathically
You know, I'd like these dogs much more
If they'd focus on the lottery.

I also mated my Yorkshire Terrier on Oct 30th. Today is Dec. 7th The only signs of her being pregnant are that her teats are larger.  Her Belly isn't any bigger, She sleeps a lot and she has had a few bouts with morning sickness. I have an appointment with the vet in 1 1/2 weeks, I will write back at that time to let you all know that out come.  And if you did mate your dog and your wanting to know if shes pregnant or not the only real way to know is to watch for signs, wait until she gives birth or bring her to the vet.  Signs won't appear until at least the 4th-5th week. Hope this helps and good luck to everyone.

I agree with some people. If you plan on breeding your dog then you should keep a very close eye on her when she is in heat. However if you do not plan on breeding your dog than you should definately spay or nueter. However, now I have a question; I recently have tried to breed my german shepherd and I am not sure why it didn't work. She was ready and he loved her but I don't think it worked. I guess I'll just have to wait. And about the vet thing; there is nothing wrong with taking a dog to the vet but they are not always accurate. My mutt dog was NOT pregnent but they said she was.

I can't believe the people that think taking the dog to vet because MAYBE the dog is pregnant (I can spell and am not a tightwad)is what your SUPPOSED TO DO.  Mostly to find out if your dog is pregnant is to just watch her.  If her teats are getting bigger, she seems to be gaining weight, and she wants ALOT of attention I would assume she was.  Just be careful of false pregnancy.

We have bred many dogs in the past and it is easy to tell if your dog is pregnant, first the nipples will stay prominent after they finish their season and after around 5 week you will start to notice she is getting fatter. If you watch the belly closely you may even see the puppies moving. Also more drinking and licking the belly area is a real obvious sign she is pregnant.
And you could even try a pregnancy test for humans but they re only 61% effective so don't take them too seriously.

I have the same problem as the perso who posted before me. But my dog is a pomeranina/chiwawa(sp?). I just found her about 2 days ago and braught her home. WHen I found her, she had been follwing a male about her size. I didnt think anything of it then. And some of the symptoms described here are conclusive with her. I know she 'might' be prenant, but I wanted to know how much activity she should have if she is in fact pregnant, and how I should treat her during this time. (By the way, if it helps; I also have another dog thats been living with me since december 04. The dog is a female germanshepard/lab and is about 2.5 or more times the smaller dogs size. Could this be why the smaller dog craves my attention and sleeps all day? Or is missing her mate? Or she could of course be pregnant....)

you forgot one sign to look for when you think your dog is pregnant, when your dog is in heat her vulva will be swollen, after you breed her and she's not in heat anymore, if she's pregnant her vulva will still be swollen maybe not as much as when she was in heat, but it will still  be swollen (in case you dont know, her vulva is her vagina)

you can tell from serious weight gaining a couple weeks into the pregancy her boobs getting bigger and sagging down. Also milk leaking out of her nipples and if she is eating much more then normal. She should also be sleeping much more and getting close to the end of the pregnacy you will notice thats she chooses one spot to nest in. If you want to make sure that she is actually pregnat then you could  get a ultrasound but those are very expensive so you might just want to stick w/ the net or books. The ultra sound is not important, i know this b/c my chiuhua has had two litters and twice(5 in the 1st litter and 6 in the second)  we did not use a ultra sound and we kept her serprate from our other dogs for the last couple of weeks and they all came out great none had any problem @ all!!!!!!! Goood LUCK w/ all and remeber Always BE HAPPY!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have a female Westie. She went into heat about February 8th but I know that they aren't fertile until the 17-22. My male Westie mated with her many times but I am not sure if she is pregnant. If she is, she should be having the pups in another month or so. She is sleeping a lot more now but there hasn't been any big change yet. I check her stomach every day and it seems to be getting a little bigger or maybe I'm imagining. Her nipples, I think, are getting a bit bigger and a bit pinker.  She likes sleeping on the couch during the day and most to the night but she still hangs out with me in my 'red room' when I get home. I sometimes have to called her 2 or 3 times to get her to come to me. She used to come right away. Is this a sign of pregnancy? My girl is healthy as a horse and eats like one too...he he he... I won't take her to the vet until I am sure she's pregnant.

pregnancy in a dog usually lasts up to about 63 days for a larger dog and about 60 days for a smaller dog. You can tell if she is pregnant from 3-4 weeks usually as she may have gain a pound or two, but if she is only carrying one then she might not gain weight at all and it may take you by surprise if you wake up one morning and she has had a pup.

Tanisha

Also if you want to know how far along into pregnancy your dog is go to http://www.schaferhund.com/pregnancy.htm or for questions of breeding, pregnancy, pups, etc email me at stanishas@aol.com. Bye!
You can tell your dog is pregnet is when your dog changes its attitude and it's stomch is getting bigger, my dog told me by always licking her stomach and you can put your hand on it's stomch and you can feel the puppies inside and if you think your dog is pregnet then take some uran and take it to a vet or the vet will give the dog a ultra sound and he or she will tell you and you will get a picture and you will get to see them
My dog is pregnant right now and I could tell by her titties sagging, which are leaking milk and she eats alot more than usual, and if you feel around her belly towards her back legs, you'll be able to feel the pups. Good Luck to all that have pups or kittens on the way....

nipples they will get larger and pinker

First you can tell if your dog starts getting calmer or starts being more loving. Two or three weeks after breeding your dog may experience morning sickness, don't worry just feed her some saltine crackers when she wakes up and a few throughout the day. The one obvious thing is the dog starts getting fatter and her nipples start getting larger and harder. It normally takes 63 days for your dog to have the puppies.

I have a female boxer and my mother has a male and for the last week we have been trying to breed them. She has been bleeding and we took her and him over to my breeders house to put them in her small enclosed kennel so they could be alone for 2-3 days and she said at night both nights she heard alot of noise and that the last night around 1:00 a.m. she heard moaning.  Before we took them over there my female didnt want anything to do with the male but when we picked them up they are all over each other playing and he still licks her. We have tried for the past two days at my moms to see if anything will happen but now they just play and he licks alittle bit but he doesnt seem interested anymore. Could they have bred over at my breeders house?  Please help

ok, sidney, first off-not all people are irresponsible pet owners, although some like to pass their pet's genes to the next generation. also, thanx to all of u for your advice, [everyone else], it was really helpful. usually if u notice any odd behavior-anything from abnormal appetite to a swollen belly-you should at least contact your vet. just watch [her] closely and you should know if something is up. i should know, right now we are attempting to breed bloodhounds. have any advice for me or any comments for what i have said, just leave a note at kmart12345d@aol.com. well, i thank u all once again, see ya!

I think that the lady who wrote that if you dont want to take your dog to the vet to check if she is pregnant than do us a favor and dont get one is a dumbass. I take really good care of my 2 black labs and I take them to the vt for shots and if they are hurt. I also buy frontline and heartgard everymonth and give them plenty of love. It is not necessary to bring your dog to the vet to check if they are pregnant and people need to learn to stop being so stupid when replying with such stupid answers that dont even help

I have a 16 month old pitbull. She came out of heat in the end of may. Just within the past 2 weeks Ive noticed her boobs getting a lot bigger, she also is restless, she makes nests in my bed, and she carries her one toy around and whines. Does this mean that she is pregnant or she is enduring a false pregnancy? I'm very confused. But I dont want to get yelled at for not taking her to the vet because this just came about, please help me if you know anything about this.

This forum is here so people can ask questions, some people aren't rich and can't afford to take a dog in to have a ultra sound. It doesn't mean they shouldn't have a dog all a dog needs is love its shots to keep it healthy and food and shelter. So all you people on here telling people they shouldn't have pets maybe you're the ones that shouldn't have them. I think everyone has great questions and I wish I had the answers but I myself am wondering if my moms dog is pregnant we mated my dog with hers and she has been vomitting and is very picky in what she eats and also is not so jumpy and very lovable and Lazy.

First of all, the first way to tell that your female dog is bred is to take her to the vet.  Vet bills can be expensive, I know.  A way to be able to tell that she is bred without the big expence would be to feel the belly about 6-7 weeks after she has been bred. (close to her welping) You should be able to feel the small lumps in her belly, and if you hold your hand still while shes calm, you can feel the seperate heartbeats.   My small dog was hard to tell if she was bred because she didn't even get very large.  You can definitly tell she is bred also when her nipples start to enlargin, and she increases her food intake to about twice the amount.

Sounds like Sidney is one of those oh so "Humane" breeders that ONLY breed for the sake of the breed and not because they make $600-$1000 on one puppy. The only reason you take your pregnant doggie to the vet is to see how much money you will make and to protect your investment. All these other people are talking about their PETS not their INVESTMENTS!

When you first start seeing symtoms like enlarged stomche and brest are enlarging your is most likely pregnet like my dog she has the craving for cat food and pool water (NO CLORINE) and she will growl if you try to move her from were she is if your dog is and outsider yuo should bring her in the house when her brest are nearly to the floor you will know her puppie are coming soon and dont be scared that will only frighten your dog more then what she is you can help your dog by getting a box laying it on it's side and placeing a pillow inside to make your dog more comfertable and if you have any questions there are great sites on the internet you can look up and good luck.

I have a dog I adopted from a shelter -spaying cost part of the adoption cost but I had to wait for the papers - which only just arrived a couple of weeks ago, AFTER I noticed her nipples have significantly enlarged (but are black, not pink)and her suddenly ravenous appetite - and this normally hyper dog is lying around a lot more - vulva are swollen, and I noticed some emesis x 1 on the ground about a week ago, though her belly seems enlarged just below her ribs - not at the pelvis. I can't say I've ever noticed any unusual discharge from her and palpating her belly is fruitless for me because she won't stop wagging her tail long enough to tell anything (she just wags all over when you go near her). I did run a (very LARGE)male dog off a couple of weeks ago when I came home and found him just sitting in the yard. I'm new to this whole canine cycle thing because I have never had a dog that wasn't spayed or neutered - and my neutered male dog keeps trying to mount her head, rear, whatever and HE keeps licking at her vulva - as does she. Does any of this rule out a false pregnancy at all? I've researched the net and frankly since it doesn't seem "textbook" I can't really tell. Vet would be fine in a few weeks but there's no getting to one until I finish working out my notice and move on to my new job closer to home. In the meantime I need to know what to expect. Thanks if you can help at all....

Hi.  My dog was in heat for about 3 weeks.  This was about a month, maybe a month and a half ago.  Anyway, since then, her nipples have gotten really hard and she has layed in the exact same spot on my bed for 2 days straight.  Also, she has been biting at my family members a lot, which she NEVER did before.  Is my dog pregnant?

I was also wondering why she keeps scratching that spot on my bed all the time now.  She never did that before, either.

Check to see if her stomach has enlarged and if it has there is either two things: if it is right after the heat cycle like a week or two after she probably just still has swelling from the heat cycle and if if is like 4,5,6 weeks later then you should start looking into the possibilities that she is pregnant. Palpate her stomach to try to feel pups inside but you would only be able to do this the 7-8 week! The Pups should feel like hard rocks! At that time she will become less active and you will need to increase her food intake. Feed her puppy food to give her the extra nutrition possible. Vitamins may actually cause her to have lactating problems. If everything above has come to be true in the last week check her temprature twice a day. Her normal temrature is 100.00F to 101.00F if it wore to drop below 99 degrees she will give birth in the next 24 or 48 hours.
Good Luck!! Dog Lover-

I have 3 Golden Retrievers(2 males & one 17 month old Female) She is not ready for breeding due to her age. I would like to wait until she is at least 2 years & I am more informed on the issues at hand! I have no problem going to the Vet,
She is now bleeding! The "Q" is: What phase is she in now with the bleeding & are dogs like people in this respect? Will she be able to become pregnet. after the bleeding phase has stopped? When (at what point) & how long should I keep my males separated from her?  Thanks & please answer ASAP!

I have a 7 month old lab mix, shes been in heat for about 10 days. There is a male dog that keeps coming into our yard, and she keeps attacking it, very violently grabbing it by the throat and pinning it to the ground, the male is a pit bull and 3 times her size. If she is fighting off this male dog does that mean she is already pregnant, or would she be fighting the dog off because she is not ready, because she is too young?

Why is everyone bashing people on her for simply asking a question? Asking for help does not make you an idiot. I helped my sister in law when her dog birthed her puppies, and now the one I kept from that breed is now pregnant. I will be the first to admit, I'amworried about her as well. Oh yes, and by the way, if you think we are all idiots, then why are you on the very same message board right now? Hmmm. Get a clue.

She isn't sleeping a lot, there is no milk dripping from her, her tummy isn't enlarged, and she is not eating anymore than what she normally does.... do any of you have a clue what could be wrong with her?

This is addressed to Sidney from the post dated 06/06/2004. While what you say about taking your dog to the vet may be true; you may want to check your own grammar before pointing out the fault in other's spelling. You should have used "then" not "than." It is not wise to point out another's mistake without double checking yourself.

Well a very easy way is to bring her to the vet. But if that is not an option for you then wait until she should be about 3 weeks along and palpate her stomach gently with your hands. if she is in fact pregnant then you should feel golf ball sized lumps in her abdomen area which are the puppies. Other signs are clinginess, more affectionate, increased sized, increased appetite, very lazy, need to urinate more frequently. If she is pregnant, keep an eyes on her about 8 to 9 weeks into her pregnancy (normal canine gestation) for restlessness, food refusal, digging, etc. these are the signs of labor. make sure if there are ANY complications with the birth of the puppies that you bring your dog to the vet ASAP to save her life and the puppies. Good Luck.

ok. my dog is pregnant and Im simply looking at answers to help me ^^ but I am not the richest person in the world sadly. My 2 pomeranians only go to the vet for shots, one checkup a year. I wish I could give them more then that, but anyways I agree with most. LAst time my Luna had pups, he died at birth. This is her fourth time and I suggest you make her a nice bed, and for signs if you noticed the male 'boyfriend' mate whatever always around her and sniffing her behind thats a very good sign. (my dogs) She would always be thirsty, and for small dogs in about a month her stomach or nipples will grow. Thats sadly all I know, but I suggest you make a small bed for her. Mine always has her pups in a closet, every single time and we always make a bed, pillows, blah blah..but make sure to always have water and food x3

I have a pomeranian and be careful because poms have a high rate of miscarrage and so u have to be very careful and read and learn alot before you go into breeding. the vet wont be able to tell a positive pregnancy until about 1 month after conception so just watch her and remember she needs good food and exercise in order to have a healthy pregnancy and at about 4 weeks into pregnancy add a half a egg and little cottage cheese to her diet every other day and that will help her and add little bit more each week until pregnancy ends.... small dogs like poms can go into labor around 59 days you can google and find lots of good info online and go to pet stores and buy books but beware and have your vet aware in case of emergencies
Good Luck

You guys really need to stop being so negative of the other responses. I came on this site because my dog may possibly be pregnant, and I wanted help on how to know. I am getting really upset because all I ever read is Spay and Neuter, Spay and Neuter. My dog had an infection, and the vet told us to let her go through her first cycle before getting her fixed. We tried to keep her locked up, but the boy dogs open the gate to our fence. Chill out people! I know this wasn't much of a help, so I am going to give you these websites on pregnant dogs - http://www.pets.ca/articles/article-dogpregnant.htm
and

My dog, Madison is a basset hound and she was in heat when she mated with the poodle a few doors down. The next day she got sick, her stomach looks slightly bigger, and she goes in corners and under tables and starts digging into the carpet, and I also saw a white liquid coming out of her teats. Does this mean she's pregnant? I think they mated about six weeks ago. What's a dog's gestation period? Any info, please E-mail me at Shortysporty903@aol.com

Some of these answers are kinda rude.  I just bred my pretty girl and she is due on September 8.  To tell someone to spay and neuter after the fact is stupid and not helpful.  Some people want pure bred dogs so there are no major surprises that you get sometimes with pound puppies.  I have a wonderful, mild mannered Golden and hopefully her pups will make more people as happy as she has made my family.  (I used to have a psycho pound puppy, I am speaking from experience)

How can some people be SO RUDE!

SOME people can't afford to take their animals to the vets office every time they have a concern.
Does this mean we can't adore, love, and try to care for our animals?
I agree. People should get their animals fixed to prevent unwanted animals.
Some people care more, some less. Some can afford more, some can't!
Do you (two people) have to be so nasty about it? good grief!
Maybe you would like to pay for our vet bills?

I have a medium sized dog that I believe to be pregnant. I noticed her nipples tonight, and they are huge. So, I started to investigate some, and notice more, that yes, her stomach is more firm, and it looks as if the area in her ribs in getting larger. Also, her vagina is swollen. It would be around the correct time for her size to be showing, around 6 weeks.

I CANNOT afford to take my love to the vet, HOWEVER~~she is so special to me that it is hands down. Tomorrow morning she goes. We WILL have an ultrasound.
we WILL spend money we don't have, but for only the best of reasons.

The internet has been good for advice, and I've grown up around dogs having puppies, and never taking them to a vet. Use common sense, love and patience. Im trying to learn all that I have available to me, so that my dog and I can have a good experience if she is.

Anyways. I'm sorry some people are so hateful and pathetic to write rude things to total strangers asking a simple question.
To all the rest! I hope we all have wonderful healthy puppies!!!
DONT FORGET TO GET PUP VACCINES!!!!!!!!!!!!
=)

I also agree that most of these people should not be breeding.

Another important feature of bringing your pregnant girl to the vet: Especially in toy breeds, you want to make sure that the puppies are normal sized and a C-section won't be required. You can try and save a few bucks and end up with a dead dog. If you can't afford a vet you definately should not be creating more animals!

Turning in circles, urination or defecation, wobbles when she walks, increased interest in food and water, nest making, sleeping in quite places or dark places, and finally sleeps alot. These are some signs of a pregnancy at least thats what I have read and have been told by the vet.

If you take your dog to the vet to find out if she is pregnant and they tell you to expect 6 puppies always expect atlease 2 more. It isn't nessecery to take her to the vet to tell is she is pregnant. It is very simple if you look at the signs. You should always take her and the puppies to the vet when they turn 2-4 days old to make sure they are all healthy. ALWAYS make sure the puppies are warm, if you find a cold puppy, put he/she under your shirt to keep her/him warm. DO NOT feed a cold puppy, I know its tempting, but their digestive system shuts down and they have problems digesting foods. So always make sure the puppy is warm before feeding. After the mother gives birth you should give her a bowl of warm milk or a can of soup. While she is in labor you shouldnt let her drink water, ice cubes work well. I am a breeder and have been doing it for 4 years, any more questions you can email me animallovers18@yahoo.com

Tanisha's answers and websites are very informational.  Especially the website http://www.schaferhund.com/pregnancy.htm tells you what to except and when.  I also agree with if you don't know the answers to the questions you are asking, why are you breeding your animals.  I know things happen on accident but if you would have taking the time and money to have them spaded you would not have to take them to vet to see if they are prego.  Having puppies is a very exspensive thing anyways, you will have to pay for the first set of shots and deworming, as well depending on what breed they are you may have to spend the money on having the dew claws and tails doc'd as wells are their ears.  If you are not breeding your dogs for the quality of their breeds, you should not be breeding at all.

i know u dont want to hear this crap because every body else is saying the same thing but this is the true stuff how to tell if your dog is pregnant I think.
i think you can tell if your dog is pregnant by looking to see if your dog is eating less, liking to go in warm spots, licking its stomoach, trying to get attention, laying down a lot,a swolen valva(vul-va), hard boobies, and if your not exactly sure that your dog is pregnant go to the vet and if you say the vet costs a lot of money then you dont have to go to a exspensive vet you can go to a cheap vet that only cost about $30-$40 dollars and if you think that is still exspensive then go on the internet to find more info.
oh and try to give your dog some attention in case it is trying to tell you its about to have PUPPIES!!!

I have four dogs. One of my dogs is almost one years old, she is a Yorkie. Her appetiet has increased, but for about a week she hasn't been eating that much. Her stomach, and boobs have been getting bigger, and she's been peeing a lot more often. She was with my other dog which is a boxer during heat. My boxer is five years old. She's been sleeping in my moms dark closet on this one pile of clothes on the floor. Then when my mom cleaned up those clothes she started to sleep in my sisters closet. She's been sleeping a lot more often. But when I feel her stomach I don't feel any thing. Do you think she is pregnent?

Hey!!! I have worked with the KW-humain society for a while now and they have quite a few impregnated animals there and the only way to tell if they have babies is to be patient and don't rush in to things. By bringing your dog to the vet all you are doing is paying for them to do something you can do at home in a few simple steps
1.check and see for an attitude change ex.attention seeking ect.
2.if you notice her breasts and her stomach getting bigger then that is also a sign
3.eating more and drinking more is also a sign of pregnancy
4. wanting to be alone and or staying in a few basic spots all the time is a sign ex. in the shade
5.licking of the nipples and a pinkish colour forming
I hope these 5 simple steps will help you be on your way and i hope i answered your questions. Also if you are not intirely sure maybe consulting a vet is the best thing to do and BE PREPARED for what you dog has coming.

Um guys I know there is alot of signs such as her nipples get bigger around four weeks and they look really sore. Her ribs spread apart some. She looses her appetite. She lies around a whole bunch because she is sore and it hurts to stand up alot.If you pick her up under her arm pits she will groan. She licks her tummy alot. And sometimes if you press on her tummy, but make sure you don't press to hard though you can fill the babies kick. They will kick at around oh 3 to 4 weeks. They kick that early because they are only pregnant for 2 months or 9 weeks. She will also have to pee a whole bunch.I know because my miniature poodle is about 4 or 5 weeks pregnant and they did it about everyday for a couple weeks.I can feel the pups kicking already!I hope this helps!

Let’s start with the canine heat cycle. The canine heat or estrous cycle varies in length. Many people know that their dog goes into "heat" but don’t realize that unlike the human menstrual cycle, which is a non-fertile stage, dogs that are in heat are preparing to ovulate. There are four stages of the estrous cycle. The first stage is proestrus, which is characterized by increased follicular activity of the ovary, a stage that is necessary prior to the release of the eggs. Outward signs include vulvar swelling and bleeding. During this time, your dog will be attractive to males but not receptive to them. In general, this stage lasts six to 11 days with an average of nine days. The end of this cycle is noted when your pet becomes receptive to the male and will stand to be bred.

The second phase is the actual fertile phase or estrus. During this time, the discharge becomes more straw-colored to light pink and the vulva, although still swollen, is softer. The female is now receptive to males and will stand for breeding. This stage generally lasts five to nine days. Unfortunately, it can last as long as 20 days and still be normal. Each dog is different and must be monitored closely. The end of this stage is characterized by the female no longer accepting the male.

The last two stages of the estrous cycle are diestrus, a non-receptive time when the corpora lutea, which produce progesterone, are active on the ovary and anestrus. During anestrus there is no ovarian activity. Diestrus and anestrus are lengthy periods: diestrus lasts 56 to 60 days and anestrus is variable, but several months long. Most dogs cycle twice a year.

The next step in the course of the pregnancy is the actual conception…well, I hope you know how that works, so I’ll skip that part. It takes about 62 days from the day that your dog is bred for the puppies to be born.

A doggie biscuit in the oven

The next logical question is, "How can you tell if your dog is in the family way?" Confirming pregnancy necessitates a trip to the veterinary office. The earliest method of pregnancy detection is ultrasound—a nice test because it is noninvasive and very reliable. Fetal heartbeats can be detected at around the 25th day from first breeding. This is not, however, considered a reliable way to determine fetal number.

One interesting fact about the canine reproductive cycle is that the dog goes through roughly the same hormonal changes whether or not she is pregnant. For this reason, there is no progesterone blood or urine test to diagnose pregnancy in dogs. There is, however, a blood test that will detect relaxin, a hormone that is produced in pregnant dogs but is not found in non-pregnant dogs. This test may be performed mid gestation, which occurs at around the same time that your veterinarian can palpate the fetuses.

Most experienced veterinarians can determine pregnancy by simply feeling the dog’s abdomen during a certain a window of time—about 20-30 days after conception. During this time period, there is uterine swelling around the placental sites that feels like firm and discrete lumps. After 30 days, the uterine swelling is more diffuse and it is difficult to distinguish the gravid uterus from the feel of the intestinal tract. Dogs that are very large or obese may be difficult to examine in any stage, however.

A third way to detect pregnancy is by taking x-rays. Fetal skeletons can be visualized at about 45 days of pregnancy. This test cannot be done until late in gestation, but it is nice to know about how many of the little creatures you can expect once the actual birthing occurs.

Get out the clean towels

Although it takes an average of 62 days for puppies to gestate, normal variation is from 54-72 days depending on the breeding dates. During this time there is really not a lot for you do—just feed the dog her regular diet for the first month. It is absolutely crucial that you do NOT supplement your dog with vitamins during her pregnancy. Although this seems to be against normal thinking, dogs that are supplemented are unable to efficiently extract calcium from their bones after they give birth, and this predisposes them to suffer from hypocalcemia, which can result in muscular weakness and even seizures. Starting in the second month of pregnancy, you will want to switch her diet over to a good quality puppy food. This will provide her with the extra calories that she needs without providing excess supplementation.

Speaking of the blessed event, here is your reward for reading this far. If your dog is pregnant, you will want to start taking her temperature (yeah, you know where) about a week prior to her due date. The normal rectal temperature for dogs ranges from 100 to 102.5F. About 24 hours prior to giving birth the dam’s rectal temperature will drop a few degrees. If you record the temperature daily you will know when it is okay to go out to dinner and when you will have a long night ahead of you.

One to two weeks prior to the delivery, get your whelping box and supplies together. Your whelping box should have sides that are high enough so that four to six week-old puppies cannot get out, but when mom needs a Calgon moment she can leave without doing damage to the milking apparatus. It is also important to have a ledge of some kind all around the inside edge so that no puppies are inadvertently smothered by the mother—the pups should be able to slide under the ledge so that mom cannot squish them. Place the box in a familiar but private area and line it with towels.

Get as many clean towels on hand as possible. It is amazing how many you will use trying to keep the canine family clean. You will also want to have sharp scissors (to cut the cords), dental floss (for tying off cords), and povidone iodine (for disinfecting the cord ends) on hand for the delivery.

I could have whelped all night…

Okay, so now comes the scary part: actual birthing. Let me tell you that this usually starts at 10 o’clock at night—the perfect time to prevent you from getting any sleep and late enough that you will have to go to the emergency clinic if you have problems. You will also want to make sure that you are wearing clothes that can be thrown away. Whelping is a messy business and there is some bright green goo that can be produced that cannot be washed out of anything with any stain remover on the planet. So, it is definitely a dress down event.

There are three stages of labor. The first stage, which will probably go by undetected, occurs when the cervix is dilating and there are some uterine contractions. You may notice some shivering, restlessness, panting, vomiting, and unwillingness to eat, and the dog may seek out a private place. If you do notice this stage (which lasts six to 12 hours), encourage your pet to go to the whelping area.

Stages two and three, active labor and placental expulsion, conclude with the expulsion of the fetus and the placenta, respectively. If your dog has more than one puppy, she will alternate between stages two and three. Once your dog begins actively straining, the first puppy is usually delivered within 10 to 20 minutes. If the active straining has gone on for an hour unproductively it is time to call the vet. She needs some professional assistance. Many dogs will rest between puppies for an hour or so. This does not require intervention since the dog is not actively straining.

It is normal for puppies to be born either head first or breech (rear first). If you try to assist in delivery, never pull on an ear or a foot; instead, try to hook your fingers behind the shoulders or over the hips and use very gentle downward traction. Some dogs will squat to have puppies; others lie down. My dog thought running around in circles and relying upon centrifugal force would facilitate birthing, so really you must be flexible and responsive to what the mother may need. By the same token, some dogs just grunt quietly as they give birth, and others are screamers.

Most puppies are born with the amniotic sac intact. If mom doesn’t attend to them within the first two minutes, it is time for your intervention. This membrane must be ruptured so that the puppy can breathe. Use a child nasal aspirator to clear the fluid from the mouth and with a clean, dry towel—each pup gets its own—dry the puppy and gently rub near the umbilicus to stimulate respiration. Use the dental floss to tie off the cord about an inch from the puppy’s body, and then cut it with the scissors and dip the end of the cord in the povidone iodine.

Now, I usually let mom lick to her heart’s content. If your dog is an experienced mother or seems to want to do all this herself, there is no reason why you shouldn’t let her tear the membrane and chew off the cord. Eating the placenta, however, is another matter. It is an old wives tale that the mother will not produce milk if she doesn’t eat them. Just take them away from her and she will never know the difference.

Mama’s little babies

Once all the puppies are born, make sure they all get a chance to have their first meal. The first milk is rich with protective antibodies that really help them to start off on the right foot. You will also want to offer mom a light meal and a potty break. Then you can all have a nice rest.

The next morning, call your veterinarian to apprise him or her of the results of the event. Many vets will want you to bring the brood in so that mom can have a quick check up to make sure that all is returning to normal and that there are no more puppies inside.

For the next six to eight weeks, the mother will be producing a reddish brown to bright green odorless discharge called lochia. This is a normal discharge and nothing to be concerned about. If your dog had a bright red bloody discharge, however, call your veterinarian right away. You will also want to continue to take your dog’s temperature and inspect the mammary glands daily so that any uterine or mammary infection can be caught and treated early.

Now that she’s given birth, you can feed her like gangbusters. Lactation increases your dog’s caloric needs by three to four times. So, it’s time to bring on the extra meals. Make sure that the babies are on a high quality puppy food as well. You should also start to supplement calcium in the mother’s diet by providing her with a specific calcium supplement from your vet or by adding some cottage cheese to her diet. Free access to ample quantities of water must be available for your dog, but do not put it in the whelping box where puppies may drown. Use common sense.

So, congratulations on your new family and enjoy the fun. It has been a long road, but we hope every one is happy and healthy at the end

If the dog has gottin bigger around the stomach, her boobs have gottin bigger by swelling up with milk, if you take her out for a walk and she is constinly stopping to pee, if she doesn't want to be around male dogs that much, and  she wants to eat alot then your dog might be going to have puppies.

MY LAB IS PREGNANT, WE CAN SEE AND FEEL THE PUPPIES MOVING, AND HAVE BEEN ABLE TO EXPRESS MILK FROM HER FOR 12 DAYS NOW, HER LAST PUPS WERE BORN ABOUT 3 DAYS AFTER HER MILK CAME IN. I AM WONDERING IF THERE IS ANY OTHER SIGNS TO TELL WHEN SHE WILL HAVE THE PUPPIES OTHER THAN TEMP. SHE WILL NOT LET US TAKE HER TEMP. ANY INFORMATION WILL BE APPRECIATED THANKS.
