I am a 5 yr old Pembroke.  2 years ago my vet said the reason for my lost fur was due to folliculitis (?). I have been taking an antibiotic and the infection is cured but my fur does not grow back. I have bare skin on 80% of my neck.  With another summer here I would like to have my natural shade protection returned.  My vet is at a loss as to what to do. We heard that MELATONIN might make K-9 hair grow. I was taking 1 mg for 6 weeks and now I am taking 3 mg for the past 6 weeks. I have a few dime size spots of new fuzz, but thats all.  Anyone have any ideas on how to make hair grow.   Thanks.

I READ THE QUESTION FROM CODY AND THOUGHT WHAT A GREAT QUESTION.  I AM A 4YR OLD TRI AND HAVE THE SAME CONDITION.  I HAVE BEEN TESTED WITH SKIN SCRAPINGS, CULTURE AND SENSITIVITY OF SKIN, LOW DOSE DEX SUPPRESSION, AND A TOTAL HEALTH 25/A&L/CBC, IMPRESSION SMEAR/TZANCK PREP AND HAVE BEEN TAKING CEPHALEXIN 250mg 3 TIMES A DAY FOR 1 MONTH.  PREVIOUSLY I TOOK CLAVAMOX, DIPHENHYDRAMINE, DERM CAPS, AND GENTOCIN TOPICAL SPRAY AND SPECIAL SHAMPOOS.  MY VET HAS ALSO STARTED ME ON MELATONIN.  THEY CAN'T TELL ME WHAT'S WRONG AND I HOPE TO GET MY FUR BACK.  HAS ANYONE HAD ANY LUCK WITH THIS CONDITION OR KNOW WHAT IT MIGHT BE?  I'M MY PARENTS THIRD CHILD AND EVEN MY BREEDER HAD NEVER HEARD OF THIS CONDITION.  CAN ANYBODY HELP ME.

I have a 13 year old Siberian Husky with substantial hair loss around her neck and chest. This skin in this area is becoming pigmented.  After MUCH testing she was diagnosed with Adrenal Sex Hormone Disease.  She is on 6 mg of Melatonin twice a day.  She has been on this treatment for a couple of months without much success.  The good news is that it is a skin/coat disease and does not affect the overall health.  The bad news is that there may not be much one can do about it if the Melatonin doesn't work.  The other potential drugs have MAJOR side effects.
