My Great Dane is 5 now. At around 10 months his hips gave in and he would collapse onto his stomach with his back legs splayed on either side of him. It did not happen very often, but he would scream in pain when it did. I watched for catalysts that would cause his hips to collapse. I noticed that a slippery surface such as tiles, playing roughly etc would cause his collapse. By slowly eliminating these danger areas, his collapses became less frequent. By the time he was fully grown and nicely bulked out (around 18 months)he had no further problems. I notice on very cold days he is definitely stiffer in starting out than my other dogs. This says that the problem is under control and care should be taken not to aggravate it again. NO-ONE is allowed to touch his tail. He is very sensitive about this. It is an extension of his spine and part of his centre of balance. I can understand why that scares him. He does not want to lose balance. I really hope that you are as lucky as I am with my beautiful Dane. It is so traumatic for all. Good luck

If you got your Dane from a good breeder, he/she should still be under a guarantee. Contact your breeder.
