Australia was invloved in the Vietnam War because the strong anti-communist stand taken by the Menzies Liberal government in the 1950's and 1960's led to Australia taking an active part in the politics of the East Asian Region.

One of the reasons why our australian troops went to vietnam was because of the growing concern of the spread of communism from the north and the fact that australia was an ally of the united states and had a responsibilty to back the US troops.

Australian support for South Vietnam in the early 1960s was in keeping with American policy of stemming the tide of communism.

When the Australian government announced in 1964 the dispatch of a taskforce including conscripts called up under the National Service Scheme, public support began to decline. Later, images delivered on the nightly news, like the summary execution of a captured Viet Cong by the South Vietnamese chief of police, ensured the fight for public support at home was lost, and that Australia's position had become difficult to sell to the electorate.

From the arrival of advisers in 1962, until the last battalion left Nui Dat in November 1971, 50 000 Australians, including ground troops and Air Force and Navy personnel, saw service. Of these, some 500 were killed and almost 2,400 wounded. The war was the cause of the greatest social and political dissent in Australia since the conscription referendums of the First World War.

Australia being a country that could not adequately defend itself due to a lack of missionary supplies and soldiers needed support in case communism expanded to Australian territory. With the United States emerging as the new dominant world power and Australia’s fear of Asians intensifying as the communist force grew in strength Australia’s minister for foreign affairs: Percy Spender stressed that by Australia securing a close relationship with the US she would benefit if under attack.

Australia became involved in the Vietnam war for a few reasons:
1) Australia was afraid of the the domino theory or effect. This theory was that if Communists aided by the Soviet Union succeeded in conquering Indochina, they would then successively conquer Burma, Thailand, and Indonesia. This would give them a geographically strategic advantage, from which they would be able to conquer Japan, Formosa, the Philippines, Australia, and New Zealand.

2) The second reason for Australia's obligations under SEATO and ANZUS. Australia, New Zealand, United states security treaty (SEATO) signed in September 1951 it required each of the countries to meet the common danger in accordance with its constitutional processes in event of an armed attack in the Pacific area.

In conclusion the war for Australia was not about helping South Vietnam but more a selfish protection from possible insurgents.

there are a number of reasons. the most important reason was Australia's alliance with its new great and powerful friend, America. another is the fear of communism and the period of forward defence strategy and fear of the domino effect. another was inexperience and inability of the government. the final was strong public support. some also say that it was expected that there would also be some economic benifits for Australia, however if this is true it was a minor reason.

Australia became involved in Vietnam :
1. To stop the "domino effect", meaning they didn' want communism to spread.
2. South Vietnam actually requested Australia for help
3. Australia was America's ally and still is and so if America goes to war, so does Australia
4. Australia thought that they would gain valuable resources (and they did), and also to gain a sense of existence. This means that Australia was saying "Hay we're down here and we're strong."

Australia went to the vietnam war for 3 main reasons; to help a friendly country from being attacked, to help them restore democracey and to form an alliance with America.

Another reason is because of the ANZUS treaty. The ANZUS treaty was an alliance which joined the nations of Australia, New Zealand and the United States in a defence security pact for the Pacific region. Therefore, if one of these countries were in trouble, the other to had to help them out.

well there are multiple reasons but the main is because of the ANZUS treaty which had been signed between America, new Zealand and Australia. saying that the countries would support each other in time of battle. so when Ngo Dinh Diem, leader of the government in South Vietnam asked for America's help Australia  being an ally of America backed them up

Australia was involved in the Vietnam war because of many factors, especially the growing concern of the spreading of communism.

The 1960's was a time of social experimentation and change as the Vietnam war was seen by many people, especially the younger generation as representing something from the past.

As well as this, conscriptions, theories that Australia would fall to the power of communism if we didn't act and treaties which were signed. Due to our agreement to fight along side with America and Britain we therefore considered to fight in various wars, in this case the Vietnam war.

Australia was afraid that if we didn't fight along side America and Britain then when we are in need of help, then the two of the most powerful military armies in the world won't come to our aid.
As there were many casualties during the Vietnam war, even more conscriptions were applied to Australia which caused much argument amongst the Australians.

Australia was stupid and joined the Vietnam war because we were followers who could not support ourselves. We joined because America had assisted us in WW22 and because we were egged on that the "domino theory" of communism would reach our shores. This meant eventually we would have fallen to communism like so many other countries had.

Australia got involved in the Vietnam war for many reasons. Some of these are the Australian citizens fear of communism, the SEATO and ANZUS alliance commitments and our concerns for Indonesia.
the Australia citizens had a huge fear of communism spreading to Australia and us being aggresively, physically forced into adopting a communist government. The 'domino theory' made us think that communism would eventually spread to Australia and so we 'stopped it in its tracks' at Vietnam.
The SEATO and ANZUS alliances formed a bond between Australia and(mostly)America so when they asked us to fight beside them we agreed.
Our concerns for Indonesia: basically we were being nice. We decided that no-one should be forced into adopting a communist government and the South Vietnamese (the north Veitnamese were already communist)were literally being forced so we went in their to give 'em a hand. (good old Auzzies) Also it was definitely in our intrest for reasons listed above. Ta Ta!

After World War II had ended there was a rivalry between the communist and the capitalist countries of the world. The period called the cold war began in the late 1940s with renowned hostility between the Soviet Union (USSR) and its former western allies. Soon nations including Australia feared they would be forced to become Communist, when the domino theory began after the fall of South Vietnam to communism. The fear of communism lead to Australia’s involvement in the Vietnam War. This began the trial of conscription, which is the involuntary labor demanded by the Government, chosen according to birth date. Men aged eighteen or over had to register for conscription.
Australia was also involved in the Vietnam War because of its involvement in the ANZUS Treaty, the military alliance which binds Australia, New Zealand and the USA to assist with defense matters concerning other allied nations.

After the french defeat in vietnam the country was divided into two sections divided i think at the 17th paralel.
The north ruled by Ho Chi Minh as a communist land was baked by the soviets and chinese. The south temporarily ruled by Ngo dinh diem as a capitalist nation was backed by the American's. When the North invaded the south, America got involved because of the domino theory(if Vietnam fell to communism so too would the rest of south east Asia and eventually America and Australia). when prime minister Harold Holt stated all the way with LBJ a few years into the war that ensured australias involvement in the vietnam war was serious

The war was the cause of the greatest social and political dissent in Australia since the conscription referendums of the First World War.

from 1962 untill 1972 australia was involved in the war in vietnam . approximately 47 000 Australian men and a large number of women served there . the desision to commit the troops to the conflict entered on the fear of comunism . the north korean invasion of south korea was a stand against another dimino falling to chinese communism  as it thrust southwards . the U.S was also a powerful ally, provinding australia with protection incase of an attack .

include information about the dimino theory and also the S.E.A.T.O TREATY in 1951 ..

to toofie"the fact that australia was an ally of the united states and had a responsibilty to back the US troops" that is incorrect we didn't have a responsibilty to back up the u.s troops, if you were referring to the anzus treaty signed after the ww2 no were in the treaty did it say if america went to war we had a responsibilty to back them up, it only said that if we wanted to we could help them, When Menzies got up and said that australia had to go to war because it said it in the anzus treaty that was bs and 40 years later our current pm used the same excuse about the iraq war that is said it in the anzus treaty that australia had the responsibility to go to wawr because america were going. just something to ponder..

australia was involved in the vietnam war because they where afraid of the domino effect of communism where if by one country would fall to it then the neighbouring countries would also fall to communism, they also wanted to be involved in this war to show britain that they where able to think for themselves(britain was not involved in the war effort) they wanted to help the allies of america and build strong relations with other superpowers of the world

Australia was involved in the Vietnam War for fear of spreading communism, in the crusade to help fight a international communist threat. This period of time is known as the ‘cold war’. This was a period of time after WW2, in which the USA and the USSR were in conflict over their different beliefs on communism. By 1948, there were communist governments set up in eastern European countries, and in 1949, China was declared a communist state. After WW2, Korea divided. North Korea became communist and south was anti-communist.
The spread of communism over the Asia pacific region made Australia more fearful. This spread was referred to as the domino effect, that over the Asia pacific region, if one country began to be communist. Others would follow in succession, much like falling dominoes.

The actual purpose of helping the United States in Vietnam is not at all to help South Vietnam. Robert Menzies really has the intention of using this as an opportunity to gain the United States as a mutual ally. Despite that, the involvement of the military in this war is far greater than the involvement of any other previous war that Australia as a nation has taken part in.

Menzies claims that sending troops to Vietnam is all about defending democracy, and protecting a country from corrupt and dictatorial regimes. This could perhaps, mean a more efficient running of government to a Vietnam.

Because many people thought that if communism took over the world there would be no world left. They were all fearful of communists and that if no one took any action against communism there would be no world left where you could have fun. When one country fell to communism another country would also fall. This was known as the domino theory and it had to have been stopped. Thats why they went to Vietnam.

You're all such idiots. The reason that Australia entered the war, was purely due to the support in which they showed toward America. Holt had realised that if support was shown for this powerful country, then at time of need, LBJ would help Australia. With an extremely powerful allied force beside them, the Australians began to feel secure and safe, knowing they now have a protector as Britain had fell to the Japanese in Singapore at the beginning of World War Two.

the major reason for Australia's involvement in the Vietnam War was the 'fear of communism and the 'domino effect' of south-east asian countries falling to communism. Due to the newly formed alliance with the USA (as formalised by treaties ANZUS 1951 and SEATO 1954)and Menzie's'Liberal Gov foreign policy of supporting allies and signing treaties to increase Australia's security, Australia was first involved in Vietnam by sending military advisers in 1962. Support increased till unpopularity heightened in Australia, as shown by the moratorium movements which caused the government to withdraw troops till Whitlam proclaimed Australia out of the war on the 27th of December 1972.

Australia's involvement, and the choices made to go and send troops to induce conflict in the vietnam war were due to a number of reasons. Reasons which include the fact that not many white Australian men have had sex with vietnamese or for that fact ANY asian women!! During this time, many sexual revolutions had been overturning the barriers of race and equality in sex. So, original beliefs that we were to kill the vietnamese communists were infact only used as scapegoats, just believable ways as to release a highly sexual nation upon all of the asian women as possible.

Australia became involoved in the Vietnam War in aid of the Us against the Communist party named the Viet Congs. They had a strong treaty towards the Australian foreign policy, aiding foreign countries in time of need. We entered also by following the SEATO and APEC treaties in 1951 and 1954.
