How to retrieve or bypass a password protected ATA hard disk? I recently bought a 2.5" hard disk off Ebay at cheap price. But it's password protected at drive level. I made tons of research without any luck. Anyone here could give me some hints? please contact me at bzhao@integralweb.co.uk.
Thanks.

Give a "low level format" a try.  Use the PowerMax software found on Maxtor's MaxBlast3 CD.  If you do not have this cd you can download it from www.maxtor.com.  Boot to the cd, and make the last floppy, PowerMax.  Reboot, boot to the floppy.  Follow the promts...  This will destroy the data on the hdd beyond the point where experts could get it back for you, so make sure you do it to the correct hdd.  Good Luck

There is no conventional software that will run on an ATA password protected drive.
The drive itself shuts off all read / write commands. You need to either "guess" the password, or determine which registers in the drive hold the password and debug those.

The password is written to the firmware chip on the hard drive and not the drive.

Here are some links to removing ATA-spec hard drive passwords. It is entirely possible, but only a few companies possess the knowledge, code, inside info, etc., to do it:

The Vogon Password Removal Pod and the AFF Repair Station really sound
impressive:

If I were in need of removing it, I would probably choose Repair Station.

You could actually low-level format it if you would have one of those old motherboards that have a bios in them that has a low-level format option. Low-level formats will not work once hard drive recognition has been done, but from bios it will work. Looking for one of those mobo/bios myself though )-:
