I have an 8 year old shih-tzu. In November of 2003 I took him to emergency and he was diagnosed with bladder stones. They removed the stones and the lab results revealed the stones were caused from too much calcium.
We put him on Science Diet UD and have been very strict in making sure he eats nothing containing anything calcium.
Yesterday I took him to emergency center and he was diagnosed with a bladder full of stones and one obstructed stone. He had the surgery and these stones are urate stones. They are round, unlike the previous.
We are having the stones sent in to biopsy also, but I don't know how this happened. I just would like to know if this is something I can prevent with diet, and how do you prevent one without causing the other?
He is my baby and I don't know what I will do if he has to go through this again. He is back at the vet's today to have iv fluids. I have borrowed money and have spent every dime I have on this.
Please, do you have any advise?
