If she is coughing/wheezing like she can't catch her breath, it may be that her trachea has been damaged.  This is very easy to do in little dogs, pulling too hard on a leash, getting their collars caught on something and struggling, etc.

This is something chihuahuas are prone to.  If it is a wheezing sort of cough, try gently picking her up and covering her nose with your hand.  This will force her to breathe through her mouth and is often enough to open the throat again.

You might want to ask the vet to do a chest xray, maybe she has fluid in her lungs or around her heart.

Hi my name is Jen, and my 5 year old Chihuahua is Spanky. He has always been a cougher becuase of his small airways but lateley it seems to be a constant cough. The vet hasn't said anything is wrong but I want to know if there is something I can give him. Something either home remedy or something simple over the counter.
