well i would like to create my own icon. people tell me that i need jpeg but i dont know if thats right or even how to begin...could you help me?

The simplest way to create your own icon is to create an icon in UIL, and refer to that in the shell's icon pixmap resource.  If you need animation, color, or other such flexibility, you'll need to create your own icon window and draw into it directly.

Whomever told you you "need jpeg" didn't know what they were talking about.  Images in X are either bitmaps (1-bit) or pixmaps (color/grayscale).

Well it's easy, you have to get thy lohkifomer, to komiffolikate the jpeg. ot ..gif**& to make the shirblikk get the excact GG6029%% hyp proto kinelok will get you to make your own icon

Use the desktop Icon editor and select the Option->OutputFormat->XPM (I think).
Import it to a Pixmap using
YourPixMapName = XmGetPixmap(...
For a button icon, set
XmNlabelType, XmPIXMAP,
XmNlabelPixmap, YourPixmapName
XmNAlignment, XmALIGNMENT_CENTER,...

Hello all,

here's an answer:

to create your own icon, you'll probably need an program to do it right. I heared stories about turning ordinary bitmaps (BMP) into icons (ICO) using standard paint, but my experience learns it doesn't always work great (especially with transparency).

Examples of programs to make icons are  Microangelo and Icon Workshop. Both are shareware and provide free trials.

For all of you who uses Adobe Photoshop 7 or higher, you should look at www.iconfactory.com for the Iconbuilder plugin. It's a filter for Photoshop to create icons.

Here's a tip when creating icons:
Icons come in three different sizes: 16x16, 32x32, and 48x48. 32x32 is the default, the size you see on your desktop. To create icons for your system tray or taskbar, go with 16x16.

Here is a site that was really really easy to use and it allowed me to make my own icon...glitter icons, text icons, animated icons, ect., ect. Here is the link...

Go to Iconator.com and there is a menu on the right. Near the bottom of it there should be something called an icon animator. From there, you can make your own animated icon. If that doesn't work for you, you can go to http://www.picgames.com/forum/create-icons.php
