My 2 1/2 year old female Yorkie was just diagnosed with a "grade 2" heart murmur.  I am looking at some very expensive tests with a veterinary intern, which I am happy to do - I love my dog like a child - but would like to hear from others that have gone through this same challenge.  The vet said she should definitely not be bred, nor should she be spayed or have any other procedure requiring anesthesia until the testing is done.  Please let me hear from others that have been through heart problems with their Yorkie.

I, personally, do not have alot of experience in this, but I have heard others with this problem. A grade 2 heart murmur is a concern, but it is not so bad that you should be terribly worried. No, you should not breed this dog, and yes, get all the tests done. This is one reason you get a good guarantee on your pet before purchasing them.

I have a 10 month old york male ( Max ) who was born with a PDA (heart condition ) and a cleft palate. I had been told that max had a heart murmur and would die there was nothing I could do. I was at the vet regularly due to the cleft issues and thought I would just give him the best life I could until he died which they said was a given. I then found a wonderful vet who said he had a PDA which with surgery could be corrected. I had the testing and then surgery to correct the PDA & cleft. He had an incision from his back to his stomach and had surprisingly little pain after the procedure. I do not regret having this done although the costs are very high I have spent over $ 2,000. I would do it again in a second. I can be e-mailed at conniep@xmission should you have any questions I did not answer. Best of luck to you......
