It means to "Keep goin,stay sane, don't give up, hangin in there"
Ex.If your in jail or rehab and you say " how you feelin?" someone might respond "Just tryin to maintain."

While the term 'maintainin' definitely refers to 'not givin up' and 'standin ya ground,' it may simply be used in place of the word "chillin'."
