My son was born in NYC to myself (a British citizen) and his father (an American citizen). When we divorced i moved back to England with my son and we frequently travel back and forth to the US using my son's British passport. The last time we tried to travel we were not allowed to board the airplane because the boarding gate official (for Air India Airlines) noticed that he had been born in the US and wasn't traveling with his American passport (which was in NY with his father). Because it was imperative that we get to the US I went to American Airlines and bought two VERY expensive tickets to the US and traveled that same day with no problem at JFK airport. We have also traveled using his British passport with British Airways many times. Were Air India within their rights to deny my son and do you think I would have any luck getting reimbursed for the almost £1000 i spent getting to New York?

joanna, your question will be most authoritatively answered by an immigration legal service or perhaps by the State Department in the US, or a similar agency within the Indian government. The remedy you're looking for would have to come from Air India. It may have been a judgment call on the part of the gate agent - I would write letters to customer relations at Air India. Good luck
(the grammar stickler in me wants to remind you that "myself" is a reflexive pronoun, referring back to itself, so "my son was born to me" rather than "myself" is correct)

If your son has two passports, why did you not have both of them? It would have prevented this situation.
