My 6mo old golden retriever is now in heat.. I'm upset...

My 6mo old golden retriever is now in heat.. I'm upset because I'm not prepared. I have 1 male dog that is not fixed and he's a mutt. I don't want my dog to bread right now, but I'm having a hard time keeping them separated. I'm watching them as close as i possibly can. Like a parent of a teenager.  My question is. "How long do they normally stay in heat.  is it a week, month? and how does the cycle work?  is she capable of getting pregnant prior to swelling and bleeding?
