I have a 1988 dodge caravan 260,000 km.  the thing smells like gas when it starts and runs.  there's darker colored smoke when it starts, runs, idles, from the tailpipe.  we're losing oil like there's no tomorrow.  does anyone know anything??  any suggestions we'll look into.  thanks soooo much.

im having the same problem i think ive located the problem at the front oil seal on the crankshaft.. unfortunately replacing this can be quite difficult as you have to remove the a/c , disconnect the power steering , remove the belt tensioner., remove the passenger side motor mount and timing belt covers and then remove the harmonic balancer to get to it. all in all a tough days work

MOST LIKELY YOU HAVE A DAMAGED CYLINDER AND OIL IS GETTING IN THERE WHICH CAN BELCH BLACK OR BLUE SMOKE AND STINKS TO BE DAMNED.

IF THAT IS THE CASE...(AND YOU BETTER HOPE NOT) THEN YOU GOTTA HAVE A GREASE MONKEY TAKE THE DAMN THING OUT AND CHECK WHICH CYLINDER IS DAMAGED.

AND YOU BETTER HOPE ITS THE PISTON AND NOT THE CYLINDER WALL BECAUSE A PISTON CAN BE REPLACES BUT THE CYLINDER BLOCK CAN BE EXPENSIVE TO REBUILD...

OR YOU CAN PROBABLY GET SOME SPECIAL OIL TREATMENTS THAT CAN SEAL CRACKS IN YOUR V4.

IF YOU DON'T WANNA DO ANY OF THAT THEN DO WHAT I DID TO MY 88 CARAVAN. KICK IT IN THE ASS AND CALL IT A CRAP PILE.

EPILOGUE: I SHOULDN'T HAVE DONE THAT. I MUST HAVE DONE 2 GRAND OF REPAIRS AND RIGHT AFTER THAT THE COPS PULLED ME OVER AND TOOK IMPOUNDED IT BECAUSE THE LICENSE PLATES WERE STOLEN.

dude your car is old and very tired. your valve guides are worn so when you shut it off the oil leaks from the top of the cylinder head down through the valve guides into the combustion chambers then burns and smokes like hell when you start it up. your rings are worn as well as oil pump, bearing inserts, timing chain and everything else. your motor needs rebuilt.

We also have a 1988 dodge caravan 225,000 miles.  We had similar issues when we went to put it through our state's smog testing.  It failed, to say the least.  After a tune up, it did better. Four of the six fuel injectors were bad, and we replaced them.  The dark smoke stopped and so did the gas smell.  But, it still wouldn't pass the smog test.  We have now replaced the catalytic converter, per our mechanic's advice, and it passed.  Chances are the valve gasket cover needs to be replaced if you are losing oil.  We had this replaced last year.  Hope this helps!
