Hi! I have a 4 yr old great Dane who has never before been bred. She still goes into heat every 7 months, gets plenty of exercise, and is in great shape. I know that Danes age faster than other breeds, so is it too risky to breed her for the 1st time at her age? Thanks!

Unless your female has had proper health checks, ex. hip x-rays for hip displaysia, elbow x-rays, thyroid check, and a good background, then it's not a good idea to breed her. If you want to breed her to get another Dane, then spare your female the pain it will cause her and go out and buy another Dane puppy. It could kill her if she has babies, that's always a chance when having pups. Do her a favor and get her spayed.

I would not breed her. by the time great Danes are 5 they are considered geriatric, breeding her now could result in problems such as dystocia, or difficult labor. i am a veterinary tech and have seen this happen.
