my little shih tzu has vomited a few times a week ever since i got her as a puppy a year ago. it is usually yellow foamy vomit, sometimes it has a sand texture (which i assume is very well digested food). i have not recently switched her dog food (only once ever). she throws up in the middle of the night even if i give her a treat before bed. she always finishes all of her food eventually eating small portions throughout the day. she will throw up at any time in the day or night without any pattern to her vomiting. i have taken her to the vet a few times and the have given her antibiotics which haven't done anything. the recommendations about frequent feedings to keep something in her stomach doesn't seem to help at all.

any suggestions? to reduce the acid in her stomach i am toying with the idea of giving her Tums or something to prevent so much stomach acid that she vomits.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Kris

Kris,
Our shih tzu is 2 years old and has the same problem.  He has been vomiting a yellowish foamy substance for the last year on and off with absolutely no pattern.  We have taken him to numerous vets and even had several surgeries but nothing has helped.  I'm sad to hear that another family is going through the same thing.  It is extremely confusing that no one seems to know how to help us.  If you have heard anything or found out helpful information please post it on here.  Thank you.  Angie

you may want to read the FAQ on this site at the link below. check the health problems with the breed and she if she has other symptoms mentioned. If your vet is not familiar with possible problems with this particular breed, maybe you can shop around for another one. hope it's nothing serious.

I have one and he usually does that when he has to go to the bathroom.  So, I let him out in the backyard.

My shihtzu does the same thing. He recently stopped when I changed his food to a all natural brand. Prior to that my vet had suggested giving him pepcid.  I would not give it to your dog with out asking your vet for the proper dosing first.

WE HAVE ALSO HAD A SIMILAR PROBLEM WITH OUR SHIH TZU AND HAD ALSO TAKEN OUR GIRL TO THE VET WITH NO RELIEF.  MY HUSBAND ENDED UP BUYING HER NEW FOOD (PEDIGREE SMALL BREED) AND WE HAVEN'T HAD IT HAPPEN SINCE.  GOOD LUCK!
