Not all 4.3 engines have adjustable ignition timing.  Some have crank-fire ignition; timing is entirely controlled by the onboard computer.  Thus there is no user adjustable timing.  Check a Haynes or Chilton manual.  If you do have adjustable timing, be very careful about a specific sequence required to set the timing.  Once again, check a manual.
Depending upon the type of fuel injection, there have been problems with certain fuel injection units (located in the plenum).  These problems sometimes cause engine miss and poor performance which is very difficult to diagnose.  An engine miss may store a trouble code in the computer.  If the Service Engine Soon light on the dash is on while you drive, get someone to read the codes with a scanner.  Also, check with a dealer to see if this particular year/engine code has a TSB (technical service bulletin) for this problem.

Most 4.3 liter engines have a timing set of 0 degrees BTDC. You get this reading by unhooking the EST distributor bypass wire (usually located underneath the passenger side carpet uptowards the fire wall).  It is a one wire connector, orange w/ black lead.  After unhooking the wire, set the timing at 0 degrees.  Shut engine off and reconnect the wire. Unhook the negative battery cable to clear and codes.  The distributor will self advance itself at next start-up.

You are not going to adjust the timing on that depending on the year. It has an automatic timing advance in the ECM. d

You miss as well if you have the Vortec engine could be from the fuel injection. What is called the spiders inside the plentum.

There are a lot of a causes for a miss in a 4.3 if I had more descriptive information about your engine ie year, if it is injected or a TBI motor.

what do you mean by not getting an answer on your timing mark? I am presuming that your timing light is operational and that you have properly attached it to the #1 plug wire which is the front left (driver side) wire?

I have a '94 Blazer w/4.3 Vortec and have same problems. I changed everything I could myself and finally had it put on a machine which said I had a bad valve. Actually, a valve guide was shot and #5 cylinder was about dead. I'M NOT IMPRESSED WITH THIS ENGINE AT ALL. Good Luck!

Go to Advance Auto Parts or Auto Zone and have a free scan done. The result will most times tell you exactly what is wrong. If the destributor has been out, reset the timing by putting # 1 cylinder on TDC with the line on the front pulley aligned with the pointer (careful, there two lines on the pulley). If the gear on the bottom of the distriubutor has been removed, it has a mark and can be put 180 degrees out. Install the destributor with the rotor bug pointer exactly where # 1 is on the cap. This will put the engine back in time, there are no adjustments. If you get it back only 1 tooth off, there will we a check engine light. If the gear on the bottom of the distributor is installed 180 degrees out it will be 1/2 tooth off and still give a check engine light and the scanner will say ignition timing problem.

chech the computer wiring and ground wire connection at the thermostat housing. These wires are week and can cause trouble if not grounded right. Have you replaced the distributor cap and rotor? plugs gaped right? Correct heat range? Check cooling system and make sure the temp is around 195f. Chevy engines dont like cool thermostats.

Hi Jay, You might want to check your harmonic balancer for  OTHER timing marks.  There are THREE of them on a 2.8. You may be using the wrong mark.  Just a thought.  Sherrie

Many of the late  model cars can not be manually timed.  They are strictly computer controlled.  This allows the engine to accept more than one level of fuel.

make sure there are no trouble codes, no check engine light. . disconnect the timing wire, location depends on the year or your vehicle, if there are 2 timing marks on the balancer, use the second one it comes to.

Not much information there.  What year, does it have the cpi fuel system?  Miss could be a number of things assuming you've replaced all the vacuum hoses, etc, I would suspect problem with leaking fuel inside the plenum, just take it off and inspect, also they are known for fuel pressure regulators going bad.  Might consider the back yard fix of valve seals on the engine with the compressed air or, as I did, use a piece of rope to hold the valves open.  Takes a couple days but no mo oil fouling.  Your timing is probably at 0 deg. , believe its the large notch on the pulley.  Disconnect the brown jumper first to disable the est.
