In UNIX there is also an awk programming ?please give me tutorial of awk programming?

I like to replace the letter & by the word "and" in a string (i.e 0$) as any line containing & gives error while reading an XML file. Any help will be well appreciated. I was using awk programming and the error I was getting was "awk ERROR progflrc.AWK: function not defined gensub".
