I use the pagestyle "fancy" with page numbers on the right and left side of the heading, respectively. Now, on the first page of the TOC the page number appears in the middle of the footing. Inserting \thispagestyle{empty} immediately before or after \tableofcontents had only effect on the preceding or the following page. \cfoot{} did not help either. How to get rid of this page number?

After the \tableofcontents command, add the following command \addtocontents{toc}{\protect\thispagestyle{empty}}

\renewcommand{\aftertoctitle}{\thispagestyle{empty}\afterchaptertitle}
should do the trick
