for a male argentine dogo it is a very drastic ear cropping. A male dogo is left with practically nothing . go on  the msn search engine and type dogos or more specifically type la vieja diana or el tumi, they have some great pics of what dogos should really look like.

thats not true, not all the time.  I have a boxer and i saw no reason to crop his ears, but i also have an argentine dogo that has its ears cropped because we go hunting and a dog with floppy ears is a liability. otherwise i probably wouldnt have cropped his ears.

What did you hunt?  Hounds all have floppy ears.  Terriers don't have long ears, but they aren't cropped.

dogos are meant to hunt puma, jag, and wild boar. theyre not like pointers or other hounds, these dogs are meant no only to find the prey but attack the game much like a pack of wolves. these are called jaurias. so having floppy ears is a problem due to the veins the cross the ears and can be easily bit, sliced, clawed etc. due a search on argentine dogos and you'll se what im talking about.

Why would you crop a pit's ears?  No one uses them as terriers anymore.  There's no need to crop their ears.  I've never heard of the other breed mentioned, but what's the point in hunting big cats?  Do you eat them?

well, some people say it makes the heads look better for shows, but i don't think the akc allows it.some do it because if the dogs in a fight, the other dog often grabs a hold of them and rips them to pieces, OUCH!!! others because many pitbulls now days are hogdogs(southern states), and a few beardogs even(minnesota,i think).some do for protection trained dogs because looks are 90% of the protection, and to keep someone from grabing the ears.if you are ever being attacked you can get a good painful grip on the ear to TRY and hold the head still so you can shove a thumb through an eye socket, never had to myself, but it sounds like a sound idea if the dog isn't over powering you to bad.as for your other question, dogos are a GREAT hunting dog. As far as i know people only hunt cats for sport, but maybe some people have other reasons too.

Answer by macker

well iggy, you dont eat the cats but some are a problem. People arent suppose to hunt the big cats anymore but a dogo is bred today just like it was many years ago.  Before puma, boar , and jag were pests so people came up with a super hunter to catch and dispose of these. Like i said people dont really "willingly" hunt the big cats but if a dogo sees one in the wild then they consider it prey. in some places it's for sport just like in the states hunting deer is a sport with points so is hunting deer puma and 500 pound plus wild boar. cropping helps keep the dog's ears from being ripped, cut, clawed at stabbed. Remember that dogos actually fight with the big game they dont just point and bark.

I don't understand why you would give your dog the opportunity to go after such animals.  I am extremely opposed to sport hunting.  Even if you don't set your dog on the animal, you're still responsible for your dog and its actions.  Leashes are amazing things.

well then youre dealing with the hunting issue not the ear cropping one. its a sport just like some breeds like the agility runs and greyhound enjoy chasing a hare dogos, presas even saloukis enjoy hunting. hunting to dogos is a joy they like it so it becomes a sport. if youre against hunting fine, im against hunting with a weapon like a gun, theres no sport in that, any moron can shoot a duck.

If you don't allow your dog to hunt, then there's not need to crop its ears.  I'm sure you can fix up a trial or whatever so your dog can hunt without being in danger...  They have lure courses for sighthounds, they do fox hunts with a drag for foxhounds, terriers have earth dog trials.

No, I am not against hunting.  I am against hunting for fun--if you kill an animal for the sake of having a trophy or just for the sake of killing, that's wrong.  But hunting because you eat what you kill.. that's fine.  And guns aren't that easy to use, unless you're some sort of champion marksman.

people do eat the boar they hunt!  i like it because my dog is doing what it was bred for. a lure isnt the same, not for this breed its a very smart breed but its hunting instincs are very strong. this is what they do and ear cropping helps the dog, i have a boxer in new york and i didnt crop his ears cause i didnt see the point but my dogo hunts. thats what it was bred for so thats what it should do.

Cropping of the ears in my opinion is very HUMANE. I breed and raise the American Pit Bull.  We do not fight them, but having multiple males in the same area, even in pins, they often get loose, fight, and tear one anothers ears off.  I believe I'd rather crop his ears than have them torn.  We only crop the males ears for this reason.      thanx pitbullgrl19@aol.com

Floppy ears create a dark, moist place, which is an ideal breeding ground for bacteria.  a drop ear also limits airflow, and as was said before, a cropped ear aids in hunting and herding.

by the way, ear cropping is illegal in most european countries.  perhaps someday america will follow suit....unnecessary cosmetic surgery?

This is to EVERYONE AGAINST ear cropping for dogs:

Ear cropping is not just for cosmetic reasons.  I have a well breed, well trained Doberman that has his ears cropped.  He is my pet, as well as my protection.  His ears are cropped for HIS protection!  Being that he is a working dog, his body is his only tool.  Therefore, if he had long, floppy ears, they would be a hindrance towards his performance and/or would be a target to anyone that chooses to harm me or my cats (i.e. a person or dog, which would aim towards his ears).
I have tried to keep my frustration to a minimum, during my explanation...  but it just infuriates me when I visit a search engine and see NOTHING BUT complaints about ear cropping and how CRUEL it is.
So for all you "it's so cruel, individuals"
...I CAN ASSURE YOU, an owner that crops their dog's ears, is an owner which loves, cares, and nurses their dogs in MORE ways than you probably care for yourself!!!  The owners of these “cruelly ear cropped animals” care for and love their animals to the furthest extent.   I spend more time loving, feeding, bathing, cleaning, doctoring, brushing, kissing, petting, playing, walking, buying, organizing, and LIVING for my pets more than anything in this WORLD, as do other ear cropped animal owners!!  I can guarantee you my Doberman (and MOST owners’ with ear cropped dogs) have/had MINIMAL pain with his/her cropped ears, due to the care they received from their owner.
In light, how different is ear cropping compared of that to circumcision?  Or better yet, having a baby’s belly button tapered?  Aren't these all cosmetic procedures which are performed during the infant stages, like that of ear cropping for a dog?  EAR CROPPED DOGS ARE LOVED & CARED FOR (DURING AND AFTER THE PROCEDURE!!) BEYOND YOUR IMAGINATION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anybody stupid enough to breed pit bulls or any dog for that matter really needs to think about how many dogs are dying in animal shelters everyday! get a real job and stop bringing more unwanted animals into this world. Have you ever walked into an animal shelter half of the dogs in there are American Staffordshire Terriers or "pit bulls". And 25% of animals in shelters are pure bred by the way i work at a vet hospital and at an animal shelter and i have seen a puppy getting its ears taped, it is extremely painful! the dogs scream everytime they have to get the tape ripped off and replaced.

LOOK MAN YOU HAVE A WEAK ANSWER FOR THE REASON THAT YOU CROP THE EARS. WHAT EVER THE REASON. I CROPPED MY PITS EARS BECAUSE I LIKE THE LOOK. IT JUST LOOKS CLEAN TO ME. I LIKE THE LONG EARS BUT THE CROPPED EARS JUST MAKES IT LOOK MORE MASCULINE. I DONT FIGHT AND NEVER WOULD. I DON'T USE HIM FOR HUNTING. HE IS A SPOILED, INSIDE DOG. VERY WELL BEHAVED. GETS ALONG WITH OTHER DOGS. AND NATURALLY IF THE OTHER DOG GETS AGGRESSIVE THE MINE WILL TOO. HE SENSES WHEN A DOG IS AGGRESSIVE AND HE WONT EVEN TRY TO PLAY. SO HE DOES GOOD.AND I LIKE THE CROPPED EARS AND IT IS NOT INHUMANE.

I have two new Boxer puppies that I don't plan to show. I didn't care if they were cropped or not, but my husband did! He won out and we did it. I have to say I TOTALY understand the piont of veiw that "it is cruel". That's what I thought. My husband pionted out that my parents had cropped Danes, show dogs however with great blood lines. I didn't want to show but he insisted that he liked they way it looked better and he really wanted it. But I got my boys home and they were already playing  and eating. The next day they were up to thier usual crazy selfs! I have to admit altho I worried  like crazy the whole time they were away from me, They seem more upset that they have rediculouse cones on thier heads than anything else. They are happy and training and good boys..(when not eating the Christmas tree!) Don't be so hard on people. It's a personal choice for you to make with your family. I am not sorry we did it because I think they will look the way My husband hopped and I think a BIG boy boxer should have the "look of reagal importants". Like I said personal choice...

In karate, a hobby of mine, men are very vulnerable because they can be kicked in the balls and considerable damage can be done in this way.

Therefore obviously all men should be castrated at birth, to avoid the vague possibility this may happen in the future.

In the same way, it hurts women to be punched in the breasts.  Therefore obviously, in case this happens in the future, all women should have a mastectomy at puberty.

Go figure.

Cropping ears have been happening for hundreds of years, there was a purpose back then, and in many other case these purposes still exist. Now the standard for different breeds is based upon the purpose of the breed when it was first developed. So therefore if the was a reason for the ears to be cropped or the tails docked then it should still be done to follow the standards to allow the breed to be represented for its purpose.

iggy,
i understand your concern for the safty and human treatment of animals, and commend your stand on the issue.
But you are fighting the wrong group of dog owners.  Most dog owners care for their animals like children.  I own a healthy min pin, whom i chose to have the "cosmetic" procedure performed.
So long as the procedure is not deemed illegal, and is performed by a certified vet...there is no reason to not allow ear cropping procedures.
Look at the issue in the same light as circumsision...a rightful personal choice.

i have a apbt. i had his ears cropped purely for cosmetic reasons, because i like the look of a cropped ear. the vet put him to sleep to preform the surgery, and by that evening the pup was back to normal. the cartilage does not fully form until 4 months on large breeds. it is recommended that you crop the ears between 4-6 weeks and the dog will have no memory of the surgery. do any of you (men) remember being circumcised, and aren't you glad it was done.

The AVAR, an association of over 3,000 vets nationwide have taken a stand AGAINST ear cropping. Dogs can die when complication arise. The pain in cropping goes on for months due to taping/untaping the ears afterwards. Many times, phantom pain can cause behaviour problems too. Maybe that is why the Pit breed now has such a bad rep??? Re boar huntung, I own a Catahoula leopard hound. Bred to hunt wild boar in LA. Their ears aren't cropped. I cropped a dobie one time. NEVER again.

Iggy, you seem to think you know everything, maybe you should stop being so stubborn and look into the issue of ear cropping before you speak... many people are for it, and many people are against it, some people don't really know how they feel about it, but the point is that everyone has their own opinion. So there is no need to attack someone else with a different opinion than yours. They are going to feel the same way in the end, your point is not being set because of your ignorance about the issue. By saying things like,"your family should be proud that you support animal cruelty" makes your statement ignorant, and does not make others want to listen to what point you are trying to get across. So do some unbias research and stop being so ignorant.

There is nothing wrong with ear cropping in my opinion. I do think that it is better when you get it done on a pup at a younger age. It does serve a purpose and dogs have a higher pain threshold than humans. How many people can squeeze out 10-14 children without making a noise? Everyone who is against ear cropping better be against human cosmetic surgery also. You can say that dogs don't have a choice in deciding, but they don't have a choice in a lot of things. They didn't ask to be taken away from their mother. They didn't asked to be spanked, yelled at, or whatever people do to house pets. They also did not asked to be tied up or caged. Ever think about that? I guess none of you ANTI-Croppers have ever gotten anything pierced or tattooed? And I guess you would NEVER get braces put on your child? They hurt...for years...but they sure do make you LOOK better...IGGY I sure hope you are a vegetarian/vegan because think of the pain animals go through just for you to eat...NOT NICE HUH?

If the dogs are getting loose, even when they are pinned down, it just means that those pit bulls are pretty damn strong and aggresive. It is in their nature to fight each other to see who is dominant so they can form a hierarchy.

Of course everyone is entitled to their opinion, and you have yours, you've stated it and that's all you can do. You aren't going to change anyone's way of thinking (especially not the way you're going) so move on with your life.

I guess you don't know pits very well!  Pit bulls have enough power to break out of a metal cage.  I've seen the aftermath of the cage we had to get a whole new cage because of it,  by the way the dog didn't even have scratch on it after what it did to the cage.

I raise pitbulls and we have always cropped their ears, not for sport or fighting reasons , but to make them look cute and they do. The only time we've had a problem was when the vet didn't cut them short enough, so whatever!!!!!!!!!!!!

Iggy Shut up! Do you even have a dog? A rat dog (small dog) doesn't count. Anybody that has a big dog knows that they love a challenge. Male dogs love it more than females. Cropping the ears is protection for the dog. I have a Boxer i didn't crop the ear cause there was no reason too. But dogs like macker you would want to. I've seen dogs ears ripped off, because they didn't crop their hunting or working dogs(some dogs). My brother is a police man and has a Doberman Pinscher.Well one day a thief pulled the dogs ears during a fight and if he  didn't crop the ears, the thief would have ripped them off. SO what you need to do is stop judging everybody and learn more about dogs and hunt because you sound stupid.

cropping ears is humane if done right and when they are pups how many people get circumcised when they are babies and dont remember it and the are so many uncalified breeders that breed pit bulls for $150 and they probarly aren't perebreed so croped ears shows you that there are purebreed

If your pitbulls are that aggressive that you worry about them ripping each others ears off maybe you shouldn't be breeding them. All you achieve by that is support people who are for breed specific banning, and have banned Pit Bulls, your beloved breed, from Ontario!

I got a pitbull puppy. I read about the breed and I think that their great dogs. Idoits and cruel people have gave them their reputation they have today. Do you know how many of theses poor dogs get put to sleep every year? The dog whisper uses Daddy (a pitbull) to help other dogs with their problems. Also if you get or think about getting their ears cropped is cruelty your an idoit. A dog with cropped ears can hear better then a dog without cropped ears.

I have had many Pit bulls and cropping can be a good thing. My males don't fight, as my dogs are taught to get along with cats & other dogs, but we have alot of bears here. My dogs keep the bears out of my yard and away from my children. Cropping ears depends on the dog, it's lifestyle, and what it will be doing.

I have had many pit bulls. Sometimes cropping can be good. Where I live there are many bears. My dogs keep the bears out of my yard & away from my children. They are very good at this. Everyone in a family has a job, our dogs keep the bears away. Cropping depends on what the dogs lifestyle will be. The APBT standard does not call for cropped ears.

my pitbull bronx was at a dog park and he was playing and when dogs play they usually go for each others ears since it is the easiest to do and it makes the dog unable to do anything...bronx is my 8th pit bull and had his ear torn an inch when a dog was playing and pulled it....i had him cropped a week later since it is safer and helps the pit bull breed with ear infections.

actually, if anyone wants to have a dog with floppy ears than you should get a cocker spaniel or a lab,  Dont get a great Dane or a Doberman.  Dobermans especially look really silly with floppy ears and blue great Danes look like wiemerieners if not cropped.  You should do what the breed calls for.

anyone against ear cropping needs to mind their own business!! Worry about yourself and what your own dog is doing and stop worrying the breeds that call for docked ears.  We all know they look better with them that way. Oh and to answer the pain question, are any of you dogs?  how do you know what if feels like?  My dog sure seems to not mind it.  She was playing the next day like nothing happened.

All cropping ears is a comestic surgery and nothing more. no medical reasos have been proven from cropping dogs ears. All it does is cause them pain just so the owner can have it looking the way they want it to. its just another sad story about the world-looks are more important than health or anything else.  and if your are so against it, GO OUT IN THE WORLD AND DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT.

I don't see a problem with a dog being used for what it is bred for. Many Pit owners crop their ears. A good example is the one used above to keep dogs from ripping it off. If Iggy(moron) feels that using a gun is ok, but having a dogo hunt is bad. Then he really has issues. Any moron can shoot a gun, even if they miss they can shoot untill they hit. As a pitbull owner it gets me mad that some states are banning the breed when pitbulls are just stronger, faster, more muscular and better looking than other dogs. Guns and cigarettes kill more than they do. Just because a pitbull is a better fighter than any other dog doesn't mean it's going to fight. It all depends on how it's raised. My pit sleeps with my chihuahua. He loves his brother to death. My chihuahua is the dominant one because i got him way before i got my pit. If any other dog wants to harm my chihuahua my pit will back him up. You can't get mad at that. Humans are the same. Wether we call the cops, break up the fight, or get in. Its a natural instinct. Let the breed do what it has to do. Unless it is used for illegal fighting, Whats the problem. Life is a cycle.

Ear cropping is not in-humane.  Dogs ears were cropped way back when they were used to hunt and taking down large game.  Now a days, it is for show dogs or family companions.

Everyone has their opinion, no one should force it on someone else.  Everyone should have a right to crop/dock their animals tails/ears.

I have a Boxer, and no, I did not decide to crop his ears, but I do love the look.  Actually, spaying/neutering is more painful for the dog then cropping.

I know a lot of people who crop their Boxers ears for show or just because  they like the look.. and they are NOT being cruel to their animals, and their Boxers are not in any pain.  Yes maybe they might be uncomfortable or it can get itchy, but in no way it really hurts  the dog.  If it did, it obviously would not be allowed.

I am happy that AKC is allowing uncropped dogs in the show ring, but still, I love seeing the show crop on Boxers.  It gives them a great look.

I'm tired of all these panzies owning bullys and crying about cropping, or using them to hunt. I cropp thier ears for the look alone, so what! If you want to treat these dogs as poodles than you should'ntown one. Go get a poodle. Also people should stop trying to justify themselves by giving you an explination, who cares what a fairy thinks, I dont.

I had my pit bull's ears cropped and the procedure was super simple.  There were no complications and he went about his normal routine practically as if nothing had changed.  I know that it is usually an unneccessary and cosmetic surgery but, so is getting an infants ears pierced and that's not illegal.
You are the owner and caretaker of your dog and if this is something you decide to do, then that is simply your decision.  Others shouldn't ridicule you for doing it.

Have you ever noticed that a dog with cropped ears stay a lot cleaner than the floppy ears? Floppy ears can harbor bacteria a lot easier than cropped,so cropped ears= Less infection/irritation and so on. It's not inhumane, it's a matter or choice, your dog was born with balls, if it's not with other dogs why do you want them chopped off? Same thing. Same with declawing your cat. It should be a choice, and is brought on like any other surgery.
