I have acquired the virus W32.Blaster.Worm on my personal PC.  I have runned the Norton Anti-virus program and also McAfee.  I have reformatted my hard drive.  My PC keeps shutting down and the msblaster.exe keeps coming up.  I cannot get rid of it.  I have looked in the registry and it is not there.  Each time it comes up, I cannot delete it, it just continues to shut my machine down.  Do you have any other suggestions?  These two programs is not getting rid of it.  It shows that it has removed it when I run the anti-virus program, but it still continues to be there.  Please advise

Until you have a firewall or are patched, other Blaster-infected computers will continue to attack your computer, which will cause all sorts of flakiness and crashes.

I've been telling my friends to start with Zonealarm firewall (free) and this advice works well. Just removing the virus won't fix your computer.

Ok, to stop your machine shutting down:
click start, run and then type "shutdown -a" without the quotes - do this during the 60 second countdown before reboot occurs.

Then once you've stopped the shutdown click this link: http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/FixBlast.exe

Open the file and run it - once it's finished it'll ask you if you want to go to download the patch to stop reinfection of the virus. Click YES and you'll be redirected the choose o/s screen on the microsoft website where the patch is.
Choose your o/s, then click the download link on the next screen, save the patch to your machine, open it, install it and reboot and you're done.

Follow these instructions

use the tool stinger.exe to find and destroy all variations of the virus.  However, this has only stopped the virus on his system, doesn't prevent it happening again.  to do this, go to the appropriate link below and download from microsoft the patch which will protect his machine from getting blaster again.

I'm using the firewall that came with windows xp, plus zonealarm, and I STILL have problems with blaster worm. I've used fixblast to remove it, i used another program i deleted because it didn't even work temporarily. And I've updated my computer with the patch. I'm still having problems. Perhaps if windows didn't put out deficient op systems no one would be having this trouble. I wish I could get someone to downgrade my computer back to windows 98, i'm sure it would run faster too.

Before you run the program that removes the virus you need to disable "system restore". Read your windows manual on how to do this.(or try one of the virus software sites like McAfee or Symantec for instructions) You disable it long enough to clean out the problem, then you have to enable it when you are done. It's not as hard as it sounds. Otherwise, you can remove the virus and the machine will tell you it was removed, but windows has self protections included called "system rstore" that will put that sucker right back where it was, thinking you removed it by mistake.

I am having the same problems. I am disabling system restore through the properties in my computer. then i am running the stinger program which catches and deletes, then i also run fixblast from symantec then i update and use any patches available. then i enable system restore and i am fine for a few days. then the worm rears its ugly head again. what am i doing wrong? is there a free anti-trojan program out there? I have disabled Norton anti-virus since it seemed to create more problems. I have zone alarm. Any suggestions? Oh yes i have reformatted 3 times as well.

OK, YES! i'vedone most all these things, and the same results. This is what happened to my old computer, it said it fixed the worm, then it crashed_-COMPLETLY-_
This hard drive is new and i think i have it again because right after i formated it, put Mcafee on it, it dectected that damn worm again. Only since then my computer will NOT find it ANYWHERE to delete it, so any and all programs that i'vetried to use to isolate and destroy it with are not workin. Just reformating it isn't gonna fix the problem. I don't wana throw the hard drive away cause i just bought it, and who's to say that my BIOS isn't where the problem is originating from? AND YES, i'vedownloaded every download and every patches mamma to try to fix this damn worm-NO LUCK. ANYONE HAVE IDEAS other than to throw this computer off a 10 story parking garage?!

Hey people, this is just my opinion, but Windows 98 Se is better then XP, not as stable, but all the new virus's hit Opertating System XP now-a-days, I havent saw a new virus hit 98 yet, its just my opinion though. Have fun with the virus's, lmao, I had the worm, but I down-graded to Opertating System 98-SE, its better then XP in some ways, anyways, have fun people.
