I recently rescued a malnourished, pregnant pit. She looks like a walking stick with a  basketball in it's gut.  The vet did not seem to think it was a big deal but I'm worried. She is about 5wks into her pregnancy so I have about a month to get her healthy enough to have these pups(she was rescued from a suspected puppy mill). If anyone has any  suggestions let me know.

CDM-bless you for doing rescue. It is very important you get this mom to good health before these pups are born, for her sake and theirs. Feed her a good quality dry food. When my females are pregnant, I feed a mixture of cottage cheese, avocado, egg yolk and yogurt. I blend it well and mix in with the dry dog food. I also use some chicken broth and a small amount of boiled chicken. Feed her small amounts several times a day for the first week. When a dog has been starved, it can do more harm than good to just free feed. Slowly work her up to free feeding around the times the pups are born. She will need as much food as she will consume while they are nursing. They are gonna take a lot out of her and you need to make sure there is plenty for her have. Also make sure she has plenty of fresh, clean water at her disposal. Good luck with her and the pups!

(7-1-04) Suzie gave birth to twelve awesome puppies. Eight males and four females. There are 4 Solid whites 4 white and black piebald 1 chocolate and white piebald 1 chocolate and white and 2 black with white markings.  And  I looked into Suzie's rescue and it turns out that her original owner passed away shortly after the dog was bred and the care of the dog was left to his disabled wife. She could barely care for her self and when she realized the extent of her own problems she turned her over to a local rescue who in turn called me. I also got to see the sire of the pups he is a solid white with awesome bloodlines (Cinnamon,Jeep and Chinaman).
