We recently purchased a home in Wilmington, Delaware that was built in 1929. We are restoring it and one of the items that we are interested in is a Herring-Hall Marvin cylindrical wall safe in the Master bedroom
closet wall. Based on some internet infomation I think that Hamilton is the successor to Herring-Hall-Marvin. The previous owners did not have the combination so we do not know how to open it. I can't even figure out howthe door opens. It appears to swing up. the combo wheel is in the center and still turns and you can feel it picking up the internal wheel when you turn it. Our local safe company in Wilmington had told us the only way to open the safe is to drill it. Before we do that I wanted to do some
research and see if we had any alternatives. We need a manual. Is there any other way to find the
combination? Is there a model  number or anythng else to identify the safe and at least give us the combination pattern?

Any information

Herring-Hall-Marvin was acquired by Diebold.
There are some "Safe Manuals" available that probably won't do you any good other than frustrate you more about how wonderful the mechanism is and how it was developed over time.

But, chances are the combination is UNCHANGED from the factory so if you can find out how to do the "out of the box" default opening, you're very likely to be safe (ha ha).

You can contact Diebold and ask them for help and they might send you info sheets from their archives.

Good luck,
