I don't seem to have a problem drinking tea or soda but coffee makes me very sleepy.  It seems to put my whole body in a stupor.
Any ideas as to why this happens.

I experience the same thing! Strangely enough, if I'm tired in the morning and a get a cappucino, it wakes me up. But if I get a drink with espresso in it and I'm already fine and awake, it makes me very sleepy. I don't drink caffeinated beverages very often, but enough to have noticed this trend.

found this on the net:
The reason most people who are made tired by caffeine aren't getting enough water.

Because caffeine is a diuretic, by definition, it makes you urinate (in the technical sense, i.e., literally and through sweating, &c.). If your body doesn't have enough water, since there's no way to purge the body of caffeine *except* by sweating it out (radical detox aside), it shuts down to protect your hydration level. Drink More Water, it's a Good Thing(TM)!

My hypothesis is, additionally, for those individuals who deal with averse, stressful, and anxiety-producing situations by escaping, sleeping, or becoming tired, the body triggers those signals in the mind that tell you "Hey, this situation sucks! Go hide, get to sleep and get away from it!"

I believe you may be slightly allergic.  My daughter and myself have many food sensitivities( I call slightly allergic) and full allergies.  But the main thing to know is if you are aware enough about the reactions your body has to food and don't like it, don't eat/drink it.
