I have a baby hedgie, until recently I have been using recycled paper bedding from the store. While I was on vacation a friend was watching him, and was nice enough to change his bedding for me. She used shredded newspaper. She just cut it into long strips. My hedgie seems to love it he is rooting around more, plowing along and having a grand time. My concern, will the ink from the paper hurt him?

I don't imagine this would hurt your hedgehog, no. When I was reading about litter training hedgies, the only downside to using strips of newspaper was that the ink on the paper might rub off on the hedgehog's feet and turn them black. That seems harmless enough, and can be washed off.
