How to configure ethernet switch for tapping data on Linux platform?

hi,i have a ntl broadband internet and 2 computers.1 of my computers is set up using the usb netowrk lead.i have purshed a 30m ethernet cable to run out the back of my dsl box and up my stairs to my other computer.ive pluged it in and the light has shown on my dsl box.but nothing seems to happen on my comunter upstairs! we anyone help..! im in a complte muddle! thankss alot!
