I purchased a black pug from a breeder. The dog is about 1 year old. I recieved papers tracing a few generations back. this pug is beautiful but the dog has a white shaped star on chest and a little white on paws. I have never seen anything but a solid black pug before. The dad was black and mom was fawn. Is this possible to have variation in markings? I would like to breed with my akc fawn but am concerned. She looks all pug and is very cute. any help would be appreciated Thanks

the white is a break through in genes, to breed your pug it should be solid black.  it does not make your pug a "bad' pug just not a champion coat.
breedings pug is dangerous too, the chance of loosing your dame or puppies is great due to their large heads at birth.  the coloring markings are the LEAST of your worries with breeding pugs.
talk to a breeder and your vet before breeding, the pre-tests are a must and it gets very expensive.

The fawn parent can mask some white spotting genes, since they don't show up as strongly in the fawn color.  The presence of white is from a dominant gene, the amount of white is environmental.  I find cooler months result in more white for some reason relating to the migration rate of mast cells in the fetal puppies.

I don't advise breeding pugs unless you have looked into all the costs, for this you can visit my web site at pugs.mysticelegance.com
Good Luck!

I pasted this from Dummies.com  (they can be useful).  Hope it helps!

    * Color and markings: Pugs come in two basic colors black and fawn although the standard mentions a silver color that has become rare in the United States. The silver coat has been described as the color of moonlight, while the true fawn Pug's coat is sunlike. Sometimes the silver Pug is confused with a smutty fawn-color Pug, but there's a distinct color difference between the two.

Black Pugs should be a shiny, jet-black color. If there is any white on the black Pug, it's called a mismark. Fawn Pugs may have a white mark on their coats, too, but it blends well into the lighter coat and doesn't show up as easily. Fawn Pugs are more popular than the black dogs, and the contrast between the black muzzle and the fawn Pug may be one reason. The contrast is striking and should be very distinct.

Another interesting Puggy marking is a darkened spot centered on Puggy's forehead that is known as a thumbmark or a diamond. This area is formed by the wrinkles on the forehead but looks like a thumbprint.

It's not at all unusual to have a little white on the chest or feet. They marks tend to get smaller and sometimes disappear completely as the dog gets a little older.

I also have a black pug with a little bit of white on her chest, about 50 hairs.  It is okay for a black pug and fawn pug to mate.  Their puppies are typically going to be either black or fawn, however if you do cross them it is known for the fawn colored puppies to have "extra" black on their coats where some black is allready located.  It makes the black puppies usually not as shinny jet black as preferred.  This does not hurt the breed at all, just the color.  If you look back in the generations of the black pug i'msure there were more fawn pugs.  The color of the pups, black or fawn, will just depend of the strength of the genes of black or fawn.  Hope that this will help you out.

Some white on the chest is acceptable.  On the feet is not.
