left side near top of flywheel housing, there is an opening ,you can see the timing mark as you rotate the engine ,(clockwise from the front). the cam and fuel pump have to be aligned with special tools when the crank is in position.

Timeing marks are for the cam, to insert a straight piece of steel into the slot on the non-driven end of the cam to hold it flush with the top of the head. The crankshaft mark is a pointer(arrow) on the transmission housing. Look for this under a translucent plastic cap about 1 1/2 inches in diameter on top of the tranny. The plastic cap unscrews. A timing mark is on the injection pump pulley. Line it up with the indent on the steel pump bracket. Take careful note of this : Just lining these marks up may not result in the engine running at all!!!. These marks seem to have a primary use of preventing valve-piston interference. Go to your friendly neighborhood VW mechanic and get him to help you use a dial indicator to time your engine. Even if you did get your engine to run without, the timing must be correct for proper combustion temperature. ( My uncle burned out a piston from running one too advanced) Also, power is greatly effected by timing. FYI:The dial indicator is inserted at the center of where the injector lines exit the pump, don't lose the little brass washer/gasket from the plug or your pump will get air and won't run properly either.

the cam has a slot on the oposite end of the belt. there is a special tool to lock it in place. also the crank should have an arrow on the pulley that will line up with the timing cover arrow. and then the slot on the cam should be pounting across the head. also theres a hole in the pumps pully and body that a pin goes throught to lock in place. when all three match up ur at tdc. loosen camshaft bolt so pully can roll without cam moving. r+r belt. tighten cam remove pin on pump. check all marks

There is only one mark on the flyweel witch has to align with mark on the bell-housing.To align injector pump and camshaft you have to use special tools.
