A dogs "period" is called a "heat." Your dog will first go into heat at about 6-9 months of age. While she is in heat, she is fertile and only then can she get pregnant. DO NOT breed her on her first heat. If you do want to breed her, wait until at least two years old. (about the 4th heat) However, I would strongly suggest that you spray her. Chi's are very prone to complications due to their small size. That risk is multiplied if the male she breeds with is larger than she. Many times, even highly experienced breeders can't prevent death. I am giving you this warning for the safety of your dog. If you have other questions, email me at stanishas@aol.com

Tanisha is so correct.  I'm glad to have someone to back me up when I recommend that people spay their dogs.  It's so much more humane to the dog, since she isn't being driven frantic by cravings she can't safely be allowed to satisfy.
