I have a 87 Cavalier that we just bought. When it rains, it has trouble starting. When raining or not, at start up it spits out white smoke for about 5 mintues and when driving on the road at any speed, it shutters and spits and sputters (sometimes small back fires) when pressing on the gas accelerate....could it be a distributor cap and where would I find it on the engine??? If it is the fuel filter, where can I find that on the engine too?

you may just need a tune up, put new plugs and wires in, there should be no distributer on this car, it has what is called a coil pack. not hard to replace, and the fuel filter is located in the back of the car underneath by the gas tank. and get that done by a professional...its not that easy if you don't know what your doing.

distributer cap, rotor and wires should be replaced so it runs better and starts easier(it just gets wet) distributer is what all the wires from the spark plugs go to
