How does "standby" flying work? Is it possible to buy a round-trip ticket traveling standby? Thank you.

The basic idea is that the airline will sometimes sell seats cheaper to fill up a plane. Of course, if they get enough full fare passengers, they bump you off.

Some years back, I flew Boston-London on one of the American airlines (TWA, I think) several times. The discount was enough that paying for Ottawa-Boston flight then going standby to London was cheaper than a bus to Montreal airport and flight to London. I just got to Boston and bought the ticket at TWA counter, never got bumped.

You can also buy standby tickets in advance, but I am unclear on details.
