To traverse trenches which were, of course, used widely in WWI. At least that's what I've always heard and it sound reasonable.

well, i think tanks were used in the war because then people can run the Germans over. the german genral named by Peter Gayzbak invented tank and sold them to the british and americans, this was half a year before the war. Peter Gayzbak was exacuted by the nazi germans

they used tanks to shove the cannons up everyone's ass, that way they would scream and you would imediately know where they were located. Then you were able to go and have sex with them all, for as long as you wanted. It is a very simple and efficient tactic used by the british and french armies throughout world war 1. In World War 2 the US soldiers copied these techniques and start shoving cannons up their asses on a daily basis. That is why the shells gained chemical compositions and poisoned the German soldiers. A quote from a German Leuitenent was "Iv was hit by a bullet that was in an americans ass. plis "kill meeee!!

Necessity is the mother of invention, and tanks were the British solution to the stalemate that was the Western Front.  With neither the Entente nor the Central Powers gaining any ground, both sides realised that they'd need to develop special technologies and tactics to break the deadlock.  The Brits developed the tank; the Germans began to employ poison gas.

TANKS WHERE USED BY "US" THE BRITISH TO RAID TRENCHES AND BECAUSE ARMURED CARS COULDN'T GO OFF-ROAD AND IN ALL WW1 WE USED 2315 TANKS IN TOTAL COMPARED TO 4,000 FRENCH ARMOPURED CARS AND 20 GERMAN TANKS. BY THE WAY I HAE GERMANS THEY ARE SUCH ARSEHOLES!!!!

omfg, incase u nubs didnt know, they used them to shoot up those bastard brits.  they were used so they could drive up to the opposing army and let the machine guns go, without being shot.  becuz they were in the tanks not gettin hit by outside bullets.  WORD

tanks were used in WW1 for many reasons. The one major reason was that there was so much barbed wire and the men could not get past the wire. So the British came up with TANKS. just to past the barbed wire.

you are all idiots, the allies made the tank in WW1. they were used for crossing nomans land without getting shot, thus the armor they used. they had large tracks instead of wheels to cross the trenches. they were also used to scare the hell out of the Germans, which it did quite well in the Battle of Somme. the Germans, however did have a tank, but it was huge and it was only able to travel on railroad tracks, thus they were useless pieces of junk

correction for the last remark i had made about the German A7V tank. they began on the railroads, but were quickly taken off. the German tanks still didnt have any impact on the outcome of the war whatsoever, for the Germans only had 20 tanks... compared to the 1,391 tanks the French had, the 4,000 tanks the British had, and the 84 tanks the US had

the reason they had tanks because they needed something to attack back with, if they didn't have tanks they would just ride in little cars around and could get blown up. tanks would fire back and also keep from hurting your self. The tanks were another shield on the way to victory.

Hey dumasses they were used to cross no mans land, but they didn't work to well because of all the holey land from the shelling and the mud. and the British had the big clonky ones that you could walk faster then and the Germans had the small fast ones

Tanks were used to overcome the power of the machine gunners as the tanks were very well armoured. They were also used in off-road navigation and transportation.

Tanks were used in WW1 as there was a stalemate(both sides had same weapons and nothing happened) and tanks broke that as the war then progressed. But mainly it was so that soldiers could fight and still be protected from machine gun fire.

Major Thomas Hetherington of the Royal Naval Air Division at the Admiralty for experimental work, proposed a large cross-country armoured-car that would not only carry guns but would surmount obstacles, trenches and barbed wire. Winston Churchill, asked captain Eustace Tennyson D'Eyncourt to try and design such a "land ship". They were called "water tanks for russia" later changed to "tanks"

The tank was not used to run over german troops (as it had a top speed of about 4 mph). Nor was the tank invented by a german. Tank designs and ideas date back to the 18th century . Although it took until the industrial age to manufacture one. Plus it was the yanks who invented the first caterpillar vehical with a combustion engine in 1885 (for agricultural use). It was not adopted for British military use until December 1914. Its sole purpose was to cut through the sea of barbwire infront of the German trenches. Also it could be used to protect allied soldiers walking behind.

I think tanks were used in the war so that who ever had them would have heavier machinery, they were also very capable of crossing trenches and bomb holes which would be very useful to be able to get around, they are tougher machines and although one tank probably wouldn't last more than a day without being blasted they would still be able to cause some damage to the enemies.
