Why did my male Chihuahuas tail bend at a 90 degree angle...

Why did my male Chihuahuas tail bend at a 90 degree angle when he was 5 months old? The last inch of his tail bent, over a two day period with no apparent injury. I have been looking for information on this problem and have not been able to find anything.  His mothers tail did the same thing when she was 1 1/2 years old.
