Depends both on the type or venue of your agility compeitition and whether you are training a beginner dog or a more advance dog. Also size of the dog makes a differnece.  Small dogs are often trained with the poles much closer together to get the dog to learn the weaving motion. Some people use the channel weave method . . . here, the poles will be seperated along a chute to teach the dog to run through the poles at his maximum speed. Assuming you mean an average sized dog (a Springer Spaniel?) who is already weaving and past the training stage, and doing one of the "major" agiltiy venues than it would be between 18 and 21 inches apart. Check with the organizations you are planning to show in to see what their regulations require.
