Why the one device (Access Point or Switch) connected on the same subnet replies the ping request to 192.168.3.255 send by another host on the same subnet.

The environment is as following IP/Subnet Mask

1. Connect one network Device (192.168.3.100/255.255.255.0) on hub.
2. Connect one PC (192.168.3.190) on same hub.
3. Now ping from PC to IP address 192.168.3.255 and capture the ethernet packets.

The network device wills response to PC ping request.

Why it happens? Please tell me (raini@punjabi.net ) is this Device problem or Device behavior?

Because by sending data to x.x.x.255, you are sending data to the entirety of that subnet, if you were to put two APs, you would see both of them reply.

This has been tested amusingly by, when windows 98 was prevalent, and the IGMP flood vulnerability was still gaping, Nuking the subnet (192.168.0.255). Every 98 computer on the network instantly crashed.

192.168.3.255/24 is a broadcast address, not a device actual IP address. everyone is the same subnet will response to that request

This address is used as a broadcast address u r pinging. since this ping will go to every device so any one can reply. as a device behavior
