I have a Black Irish Setter, he is half Setter and half Black Lab.  His face tends to be a little bit of a chocolate lab color expecially in the sunlight.

It is not possible for an Irish Setter to be black. They can only be redish types of colors, although it may be a gordon setter.

I have half black lab, Irish setter. He is black with red tone when the sun light hits him a certain way. His muzzle is longer then a normal lab and he has that top bump on his head that Irish setters have. He is about 110lb. His hair is short like a labs except for some strands of long hair on his ears. I couldn't ask for a better dog.

My dog was a black Lab-Irish Setter mix, and she looked just like a black Irish setter.  In the sun you could see the red coming through on her front legs.  She also had a small white stripe on her chest.  Your dog could also be a Flat Coated Retriever.

I recently got a dog that looks like a black Irish Setter.  Although your dog could be a mix of some sort or a breed I'm not familiar with, it sounds like you may have a "Flat-Coated Retriever" (although the breed standard does not include white anywhere on the dog.)  Check the web for this breed.

It's absolutely possible to have a full-bred black Irish setter, thanks to a recessive gene. Black Irish pups are rare and are almost never registered by "show" breeders by their kennel name because they don't measure up to the standard. I once owned a Gordon setter (supposed to be black and tan) that was red with a white blaze -- his sister was red too. Don't doubt your breeder, just thank him/her for saving this great dog for you!

I just went to see a dog (answering a "free lab puppies" sign) and it was black with a white chest.  It looked, for the most part, like a black lab.  The owner said that the father is a black lab and the mother is an Irish setter.

I had a all black Gordon Setter, no tan at all any ware. His name was Hunt's Rick Majestic Shain. He came from a litter of black and tans. Shay was a unique in every way and the best bird dog ever.

I have a Black lab/Irish setter mix. It's very possible to have a Black Irish Setter, because Sampson (my dog) is the same exact color and description as your's.

flat coat retrievers are beautiful, glossy black dogs...their coat is identical to an Irish Setter's, but it's glossy black.

they are a little bit thicker than a plain old setter...but gorgeous, well-behaved animals.

YES it is possible - I had a black Irish setter growing up & she came from 2 red irish setters. But they are considered "mistakes" and not "excepted" - how discriminating. She was the BEST dog ever. My father picked her because she was different and the owner wasn't going to be able to sell her.

It is possible to have a black purebred irish setter. Since red is a pigment of black. The color black being the presence of all colors combined. This is a very rare color phase.
I know a couple who had purebred male and female irish setters with papers on both and in almost every litter there were black puppies with a white mark on the chest and red puppies with white on the chest, in the same litter!

Irish Setters can only either be red, or red and white.
Gordon Setters are black & tan.
English Setters are white with black or red ticking.

The dog is probably a cross setter or spaniel. Its impossible that he is purebred irish setter.

Irish setters are red, however they use to be red and white and now you can find red and white ones *rarely*,  black *irish setters* are probably a mix breed. Gordan setters are black with definate red markings.

several years ago, I had a half lab/half irish setter female and a pure irish setter male.  they mated the red puppies were all short hair, the black puppies were long haired with all the features of an irish setter.  when out in the sun the black had red highlights.

There have been black Irish Setters. Rarely seen, but they have been in some litters. They are gorgeous. Believed to be a throwback to Gordon influence in the breed. The standard even states that any black marking is to be disqualified which means it does show up. There are also solid red Gordon Setters but they are not "Irish" red.
